Computer telephony developers gain higher density and performance from new Dialogic DualSpan products; Dialogic raises industry standard for performance with first in series of multi-span products

Business Wire, March 6, 1996

PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 1996--Dialogic Corp. (NASDAQ:DLGC), the world's leading manufacturer of standards-based computer telephony (CT) components, today announced the DIALOG/HD(TM)/DualSpan(TM), a high-performance series of voice and call processing boards designed for large scale PC-based systems.

The DIALOG/HD DualSpan product series breaks previous slot limits with the industry's first 48- and 60-port voice processing cards to include two digital network spans in a single PC slot. Developers can use the DualSpan to build higher density systems or to meet their current needs with smaller, less expensive PCs.

With the new DualSpan products, Dialogic continues to challenge the industry's expectations for performance with support for four Intel 486GX(TM) processors and an impressive three billion operations per second (BOPS) of Motorola Digital Signal Processor (DSP) power.

"The DualSpan increases our competitiveness and enables us to open new markets internationally," said Danny Ramot, director of Software Research and Advanced Technology at Executone in Milford, Conn. "More on-board memory allows us to off-load the PC, reducing the real time constraints of the host PC's operating system," Ramot added.

The DualSpan is also the only high-density voice processing product in the industry to offer ISDN Primary Rate protocols approved in more than 20 countries. Each Dialogic product has been designed to support today's most demanding features with plenty of room for future growth. In this light, the company will extend even further its technology leadership in CT by offering additional multi-span products later this year.

Developers Use DualSpan to Build Smaller, Less Expensive PC-Based Systems

Even a moderate-sized application today could require more slots than typically found in a desktop computer. The developer must then resort to larger, industrial-strength PCs with passive backplanes and higher cost. With the DualSpan proudcts, developers can comfortably fit a 300 port switching system in a lower cost desktop Pentium PC.

"Our high-end customers will use the DualSpan to surpass the current slot limitations of a PC chassis," said Bob Edgar, president of Parity Software in San Francisco. "The DualSpan enables developers to increase the number of available slots and system size, and this in turn broadens their sales opportunities."

"The DualSpan will enable us to provide higher density systems that take up the same footprint," said Tony Shay, national sales account manager at DAX, in Pine Brook, N.J., which provides high port density CTI systems such as 1-800-MUSIC-NOW. "The higher density is especially important for our Central Office (CO) applications, where space is at a premium," Shay added.

The DualSpan augments the company's DIALOG/HD product line, which today consists of 13 voice processing and intelligent network interface components, all with SCbus connectivity.

New Applications of the DualSpan

Developers expect to use the DualSpan to run a myriad of new applications, such as:

-- Call Completion on a Card - Debit cards and international call back applications can now be implemented with a single board.

-- Protocol Conversion on a Card - Each of the digital interfaces on the DualSpan products can be configured to run different signaling protocols. Thus the DualSpan can provide a protocol conversion to bring ISDN features to older equipment, without taking additional hardware in the CT system.

-- Large Voice Processing System - DualSpan's increased on-board DSP power permits use of a lower bit rate coding scheme, such as 12 or 16 kbps, enabling systems to double in size. DualSpan's Intel 486 processors will have the capability to store and play short segments of voice, eliminating the need for host data transfers that are bus bandwidth intensive.

All DIALOG/HD DualSpan products offer open algorithm voice coding, PitchPerfect(TM) Speed Control, and Global Tone Detection and Generation. The series also offers Call Progress Analysis with Patented Positive Answering Machine Detection(TM), more than 30 GlobalCall E-1 CAS and ISDN protocols worldwide, and are available with integrated Global Dial Pulse Detection.

DualSpan Application Compatibility

"Developers can immediately benefit from reduced slot requirements without changes to their application," said Martin Zary, DualSpan product marketing manager at Dialogic. The DualSpan series supports application development under Windows NT, UNIX, DOS and OS/2 operating systems. An application written for Dialogic's SCbus products can now work on boards ranging from the four port D/41ESC, all the way up to the new 60 port D/600SC-2E1.

As we introduce our EASE integrated development environment to the Windows NT market, the DualSpan will enable us to offer a price competitive platform for high-density systems," said Carlton Carden, president of Expert Systems Inc., in Atlanta.

Introduction of the DualSpan at CT Expo '96

The new DIALOG/HD DualSpan series will be introduced next week at CT Expo '96, in Los Angeles (Booth No. 1212). DualSpan products will take part in the highest performance and capacity SCbus-based programmable switch demonstration ever created.
