OpenVision Technologies Inc. Receives Second Export License from State Department for Security Encryption; Allows Users to Create Global Secured Networks
Business Wire, May 1, 1996
PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 1996--OpenVision Technologies Inc., a leading supplier of client/server systems management solutions today announced it has received its second international security software Distribution Arrangement from the United States State Department for export of its product, AXXiON- Authenticate.
The Distribution Arrangement allows users to implement network security in most major industralized countries utilizing industry-standard encryption technology, thus creating a secured global network.
Through its Distribution Arrangements, OpenVision may internationally distribute AXXiON-Authenticate in 2 ways: (1) a full 56-bit DES encryption version that may be deployed by U.S.-based corporations and their foreign subsidiaries; (2) a 40-bit DES encryption version that may be deployed by non U.S.-based corporations and its subsidiaries. Both versions are fully interoperable.
Under the Arrangements, users may purchase AXXiON-Authenticate for deployment in any U.S. State Department-approved country without having to obtain an individual export license. This is an exception to the International Traffic and Arms Regulation (ITAR), which requires individual export agreements for security software products that use encryption technology to provide access, confidentiality and data integrity services.
AXXiON-Authenticate is a security authentication application based on MIT Kerberos V5 that provides data encryption, data integrity and message confidentiality services. It has become the de facto industry standard and utilizes the GSS-API, an industry-wide security service API authored by John Linn, principal architect at OpenVision and subsequently adopted by the Open Group (formerly X/Open).
"International companies with distributed computing environments require fail-safe security on a global basis," said Richard Barker, senior vice president of OpenVision's Product Division. "We're pleased to enable our customers to implement a worldwide security solution without incurring the usual delays in seeking export licenses."
AXXiON-Authenticate is currently available for most UNIX systems and systems running Microsoft WindowsNT.
OpenVision Technologies Inc. is a leading supplier of systems management applications and services focused on automating the management of business applications within complex, distributed computing environments.
