Business Wire, May 28, 1996

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1996--Taiwan Power Co. has selected GE Nuclear Energy to supply the nuclear island design, equipment, and nuclear fuel for Taiwan's fourth nuclear power plant project, Lungmen.

The value of this contract is about US$1.8 billion.

"GE is very pleased with the award of the Lungmen project from Taiwan Power Company," said Steve Specker, vice president and general manager, GE Nuclear Energy. "It was an intense international competition. We are pleased to continue our long association with Taiwan's nuclear program."

GE Nuclear Energy will design and provide this scope of supply for two 1,350 Mwe Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWRs). The GE Team is world class, including: Black & Veatch, Hitachi, Shimizu, Toshiba, and other U.S., Taiwan, and international participants.

The ABWR has proven advantages in design, construction, and operation. It is the only advanced design approved by both the United States and Japan licensing authorities. The world's first ABWR, Unit 6 at the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa site, was synchronized to the Tokyo Electric Power Company's generating system earlier this year and reached full power months ahead of schedule. ABWR Unit 7 will be in full power operation next year.

Work on the Lungmen Project is expected to begin in the next several months, with commercial operation for the two units to occur in 2003 and 2004.
