TriNet Services and VASCO debut Internet AccessKey New online authentication solution uses award-winning Java applet to limit access to proprietary Web sites
Business Wire, May 29, 1996
RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 29, 1996--TriNet Services Inc., and VASCO Data Security, Inc. (VDSI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of VASCO Corporation (OTC Symbol: VASC) announced today the debut of the Internet AccessKey, a solution that limits access to proprietary information on the Internet's World Wide Web by combining an award-winning Java(TM) applet and a patented hardware device that reads a flashing bar code off the computer screen. The Internet AccessKey was jointly developed by TriNet Services and VDSI. VDSI developed and holds the patent on the AccessKey authentication device.
This unique dual technology approach goes well beyond the security limitations of software-based passwords, allowing organizations to securely use the Internet for confidential communications and business transactions. The applet generates a random challenge in the form of the flashing barcode. The AccessKey reads the bar code and generates a unique response after the user enters their Personal Identification Number (PIN) into the device. The response is read by the applet, and upon verification is granted access to that portion of the web site.
"The Internet AccessKey is a breakthrough product in making confidential business transactions over the Internet secure," said John Haggard, president of VDSI. "It will provide any company wanting to use the Internet to make proprietary information available to select remote users with the security they need to protect their valuable data."
The Internet AccessKey won first place for Productivity Tools at the 1996 Java Cup International Awards today. Scheduled for full availability this summer, a version of the product is currently available which features the Java applet and a specified number of keys to begin implementation of a secure Web site. The Internet AccessKey currently works with Netscape web servers including the Netscape Commerce Server, Netscape FastTrak Server, and the Netscape Enterprise Server.
For a limited time, pricing starts at $999 for 10 AccessKeys and the Java applet. An access control system which provides full integration of the Internet AccessKey with the access control of a web site will be available in July. Early buyers will get a free upgrade to the new software and will use the AccessKey to download the upgrade over the Internet.
