Business Wire, May 9, 1996
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 1996--Acclaim Comics, the comic book publishing subsidiary of entertainment software publisher, Acclaim Entertainment Inc. (NASDAQ: AKLM), has named Fabian Nicieza, one of the best-selling comic book writers of all-time, senior vice president and editor-in-chief. Nicieza will oversee all editorial operations including the creative development and content of all titles under Acclaim Comics. Over the past 10 years, Nicieza worked for Marvel Comics as a marketing director, writer and editor. He is, perhaps, best known for his writing of X-Men, the No. 1 selling comic book title over the past three years. Since 1987, the Fabian Nicieza by-line has sold over 50 million copies in the United States and Canada. He replaces Bob Layton who will remain a consultant to Acclaim Comics and will also continue to write several new comic books. Nicieza will report directly to Steve Massarsky, president of Acclaim Comics.

"Fabian brings a wealth of creative expertise, management experience and energy to Acclaim Comics, as well as an excellent command of related licensing industries," says Massarsky. "With Fabian's leadership, we're looking forward to not only furthering the development of our existing comic book lineup, but also building equity in a variety of Acclaim properties and pursuing opportunities in other mediums including interactive entertainment."
Existing Acclaim Comics properties that have made the jump from the comic book pages to interactive entertainment platforms include Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Acclaim Entertainment's debut Nintendo 64(R) title by the same name scheduled for release later this year, and X-O Manowar, who will star in the first-ever video game comic book crossover, Iron Man/X-O Manowar: In Heavy Metal, scheduled for release this summer for the Sony PlayStation(TM), Sega Saturn(TM), Game Boy(R), Game Gear(TM) and DOS CD-ROM systems. In addition, Nicieza is slated to write the upcoming two-part Acclaim/Marvel comic book crossover, Iron Man/X-O Manowar.
"We're in the process of developing a very diversified product line that combines substance with style," says Nicieza. "Quality comics begin when you place a compelling, conflicted character into dramatic situations. Good work invariably starts with good writing and our art will serve to enhance clear, concise and exciting storytelling. Building Acclaim Comics on this philosophy will enable us to develop more properties like Turok and X-O Manowar that have the ability to expand into other mediums," he added.
Prior to joining Acclaim, Nicieza wrote Marvel's X-Men family of titles, Spider-Man, and DC's revamped Justice League series. His comic book writing credits also include Avengers, New Warriors, Cable, X-Force and Night Thrasher. Nicieza also worked in Marvel's Editorial department and was responsible for the monthly production and scheduling of licensed properties such as Barbie, Ren & Stimpy, Darkman, Alf and William Shatner's Tekworld. He held various positions at Marvel in advertising, public relations and promotions. Nicieza earned a bachelor of arts degree in Communications from Rutgers University.
