Business Wire, Nov 11, 1996
JACKSON, Miss.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1996--CASIO COMPUTER CO. LTD. and SkyTel Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp., Jackson, Miss., (NASDAQ:MTEL), today announced an agreement to jointly develop and market SkyTel 2-Way wireless messaging applications to operate with CASIO mobile information devices.
Under this agreement, the two industry leaders will combine CASIO's expertise in consumer electronics and SkyTel's extensive wireless messaging capability to create a family of new products and services which utilize narrowband PCS technology and provide the consumer with a new level of portability and ease of use.
SkyTel launched the world's first two-way paging and wireless messaging service in September 1995. With SkyTel 2-way, users can create, send, receive, reply to, file and forward brief text messages wirelessly to and from Internet email addresses and other SkyTel 2-Way products (or originate messages to SkyTel one-way pagers).
CASIO is one of the world's leading manufacturers of mobile information devices, including Digital Diaries, handy terminals and a new handheld PC that is scheduled to go on sale later this year. The company, which has aggressively expanded its presence in the communications market, developing pagers and PHS (Personal Handyphone System) terminals, is positioned to become the leading pioneer in the development of next-generation information devices.
"We are pleased to announce the collaboration with SkyTel, a leader in the field of wireless messaging," said Masayuki Hakata, Managing Director of CASIO COMPUTER CO. LTD. "This gives a high level of mutual added value to both products and SkyTel 2-Way wireless messaging services. As a result, users can be provided with more comfortable communication solutions."
"When it comes to consumer electronics products that are both portable and popular, few brands can match the enduring success of CASIO," said John T. Stupka, president and CEO, Mtel. "The combination of SkyTel 2-Way wireless messaging services and CASIO's next generation of communications and information delivery devices will provide users with a broad spectrum of mobile solutions to fit their personal needs."
CASIO and SkyTel fully expect their relationship to grow even stronger in the future as they jointly develop the wireless messaging applications that will be needed in the years ahead.
