Motorola achieves milestone in global roll-out of advanced two-way and voice messaging technology

Business Wire, Nov 25, 1996

FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 1996--Paging subscribers outside the United States will soon benefit from Motorola's advanced voice messaging technology, the InFLEXion(tm) protocol, as well as its two-way messaging technology, the ReFLEX(tm) protocol, as a result of the company's aggressive international strategy designed to bring the benefits of advanced messaging to end users worldwide.

Canadians will experience advanced voice messaging through trials to be conducted by Bell Mobility in Ottawa in early 1997. The trials are part of Bell Mobility's plans to assess the market for advanced messaging services and personal communications devices. The trial will be conducted over several months and will involve Tenor(tm) messaging units supplied by Motorola.

"Motorola anticipates rapid growth in international investment in advanced messaging next year," said Larry Conlee, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola's Advanced Messaging Markets Division. "In addition to seeing the U.S. market hitting full stride in early 1997, we expect a heightened level of activity worldwide."

Bell Mobility is the largest of 15 wireless communications companies across Canada which form Mobility Canada, Canada's leading provider of wireless services. Mobility Canada holds nationwide Narrowband personal communications services licenses in Canada. Canada has allocated eight licenses designed to stimulate the market for wireless services.

"Based upon our experience in paging and cellular, we expect many existing customers to add advanced messaging services to their communications tool box, and more importantly, we expect voice paging to bring many new users into the wireless market for the first time," said Frank Maduri, manager of business development, Bell Mobility.

In addition to increased presence in Canada, Motorola is also making advanced messaging inroads in other parts of the world. The FLEX(tm) protocol has become the de facto standard for high-speed paging, having been adopted by 70 percent of the world's markets. FLEX is the national protocol standard in Japan and China. In Latin America, Motorola announced a strategic initiative to bring advanced messaging products and services to operators throughout the continent. In Europe, Philips Electronics NV has licensed the FLEX, ReFLEX and InFLEXion protocols. Motorola has also successfully demonstrated ReFLEX technology in countries as diverse as France, the Netherlands, Mexico, China, India and Singapore.

Motorola's advanced voice messaging device, Tenor, utilizes the InFLEXion protocol. Tenor allows users to receive stored voice messages from a belt-worn, wireless answering machine. In addition to advanced voice capabilities, the InFLEXion protocol will offer data messaging at speeds of up to 112,000 bits per second (bps) on a 50 kHz nationwide channel and the highest- capacity throughput for Narrowband PCS. Tango(r) is the world's first high-speed two-way messaging device based on the ReFLEX two-way protocol.

Bell Mobility provides a complete range of wireless communications solutions -- one- and two-way paging, cellular, data, satellite and airline passenger communications services -- to more than one million Canadian customers. Bell Mobility companies are subsidiaries of BCE Mobile Communications Inc., a publicly-traded company (TSE, ME, NYSE - symbol BCX) which is 65 percent owned by BCE Inc.

Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems and services. Major equipment businesses include paging and data communications, personal communications, cellular telephone, two-way radio, automotive, defense and space electronics and computers. Motorola semiconductors power communication devices, computers and millions of consumer products. Motorola's 1995 sales were $27 billion.
