Business Wire, Nov 26, 1996

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 26, 1996--

Provides immediate support for next generation of PCI bus-based

Sun Microelectronics platforms

Sun Microsystems Inc. and Performance Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PTIX) today announced the selection of PTI as a supplier of WAN communications solutions for Sun's new SPARCengine(tm) Ultra AX(tm) motherboard.

These products support the industry standard PCI hardware architecture just adopted by Sun Microelectronics, a division of Sun Microsystems Inc.

The Ultra AX board, powered by modular UltraSPARC processors, is the first Sun platform to offer the cost reductions associated with PCI bus components and industry-standard PC commodity memory, peripherals and power supplies.

The PCI334 Serial Communications Controller from Performance Technologies is compatible with Sun's new SPARCengine Ultra AX motherboard and is, in fact, among the first PCI bus products on the market compatible with this platform. The PC1334 is provided with software drivers for Sun's Solaris 2.5.1 operating system.

The PCI334 supports all communications protocols available from SunSoft, including PPP, Frame Relay and X.25, and provides an ideal high bandwidth communications solution for Internet and Wide Area Network applications. The PCI334 is available starting at $945.

Performance Technologies is a key participant in Sun Microelectronics' strategy to develop third-party cooperative relationships that verify the operation of PCI bus cards for the Ultra AX platform.

"Our company has a long history of providing high performance and high reliability communications products to our customers," said Hank Heneghan, PTI's product manager. "Today's announcement further reinforces our commitment to the Sun marketplace and signals our intent to provide a wide array of effective solutions for today's network infrastructure."

With annual revenues of more than $7 billion, Sun Microsystems Inc., provides products and services that enable customers to build and maintain open network computing environments. Widely recognized as a proponent of open standards, the company is involved in the design, manufacture and sale of products, technologies and services for commercial and technical computing. Sun Microsystems was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif.

Performance Technologies Inc., headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., designs, manufactures, and markets a wide variety of fault-tolerant, high-performance communications, networking and data storage interface system products. The company's products are targeted towards high-performance, mission-critical networking solutions used in telecommunications, financial services, defense and transportation. Performance Technologies Inc. is publicly traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol PTIX.
