Lucent Technologies delivers Wireless Business Communications for large buildings and campuses

Business Wire, Oct 16, 1996

BASKING RIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 1996--Lucent Technologies announced today availability of the DEFINITY(R) Wireless Business System/PWT (Personal Wireless Telephony) throughout the United States.

Using pocket phones, this wireless telecommunications system works in large workplaces--high rise buildings or campus environments. It delivers desk-phone capabilities without incurring airtime charges. The system is multi-zone, covering up to four million square feet and multi-line. Multi-line means that a user can be talking on one call, and decide from the display whether or not to take the another call coming in, or let it go to voice mail.

"Multi-line is one of the features most valued by our test-site customers," said Barry Weinbaum, business wireless market director for Lucent Technologies. "Our customers have been eager for the convenience and efficiencies that wireless phones bring, and they're thrilled to be able to keep all the features of wired desk phones.

"Our system has a new feature they love--display of alpha-numeric calling party id. This is in addition to features they already count on, such as speed dial, programmable buttons, hold, transfer, conference, and access to voice mail."

Operating in the unlicensed PCS 1.9 Ghz spectrum, the system's digital transmission provide clear, secure communications. PWT, Personal Wireless Telephony, is the U.S. industry standard air interface used by the system.

In addition to the pocket-phones, the system consists of:

-- antennas placed throughout the business to hand-off the signal

where ever the user goes;

-- the DEFINITY(R) Enterprise Communications Server, Lucent's

powerful central switching device;

-- a Windows(a)-type software program running on a system manager

PC to administer and manage the entire system;

-- and a Mobility Manager server providing the interface among

all the other parts of the system.

An industry-exclusive engineering design system, called the WiSE (Wireless System Engineering) system, is used to place the antennas for most effective communication. Created by Bell Labs, this patented expert system allows designers to program a specific building's floor plan and construction into a computer. The computer then shows engineers exactly where to locate the wireless system antennas.

Lucent Technologies has been No. 1 in the U.S. business wireless marketplace since 1995. With this announcement Lucent is delivering on its January promise to add the Definity Wireless Business System/PWT to its FreeWorks(TM) portfolio of wireless telecommunications products. FreeWorks products also include:

-- the TransTalk(TM) single-zone wireless business system for the

United States,

-- the FORUM(TM) Personal Communications Manager multi-zone

system working in the CT2 standard for Asia Pacific and Latin

America,

-- and the DEFINITY(R) Wireless Business System/DECT multi-zone

system for Europe.

The wireless business systems market is growing rapidly as more and more businesses turn to the benefits such systems provide. Lucent's installed base of more than 50,000 business wireless customers has noted customer service, efficiency and revenue gains. For instance, tellers at Bank One of Merrillville, Indiana, found they could give their customers more privacy without dragging papers and sometimes the phones themselves off the desk and onto the floor because of stretched phone cords. Moreover, by having the phones with them where ever they walked, they no longer missed revenue generating calls.

Prices for the Definity Wireless Business System/PWT begin at $1300 per user. Customers interested in further wireless business system information may contact 908-953-6057.

Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, consumer and business telephone systems, and microelectronics components. Bell Laboratories is the research and development arm for the company.

Lucent Technologies was formed as a result of AT&T's restructuring and became a fully independent company -- separate from AT&T -- on September 30, 1996. -0-
