AMQUEST 'Bandwidth-Server' featuring Microsoft Windows NT offers 67.2K uncompressed data link using two phone lines
Business Wire, Oct 25, 1996
LANCASTER, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 1996--
--Bandwidth-Server(TM) scaleable to 134.4K with 4 standard voice-grade
phone lines --Faster than ISDN plus 9X max data compression with V.42bis --Ideal for Internet, Remote LAN access and Videoconferencing
Friday, AMQUEST(TM) Corp., a PC enhancement company, announced a communications server based on Windows NT and its line of V.34 HyperModems allowing users to achieve ISDN rates over ordinary multiple phone lines.
The Bandwidth-Server manages two or more 33.6 HyperModem links for a single higher bandwidth connection - a virtual 67.2K connection with 2 HyperModems and a 134.4K connection with 4 modems. In effect Bandwidth-Server users can achieve ISDN rates by simply acquiring more voice grade lines.
Related Results
The Bandwidth-Server provides a cost-effective technology for achieving high speed data links with several advantages over existing alternatives.
Benefits include: -- Faster speed using two HyperModems than a single ISDN 64k channel -- Leverages universally available voice grade phone lines -- Based on proven V.34 modem technology -- The connection speed scales in both directions (67K send/67K receive
and up to 134.4K send/receive data) -- Employs the V.42bis compression standard for achieving higher
compressed data speeds (no compression standard yet for ISDN) -- Works with any Winsock-compliant communications program and
supports TCP/IP, NETBUI and IPX protocols -- Supports the popular Microsoft Windows NT server and workstation
environments
The Bandwidth-Server is expected to offers significant advantages in a variety of market applications such as :
- High Speed Internet Access
Internet Service Providers (ISP) can employ this technology to offer higher speed dial-up connections to their user base. In lieu of marketing high speed digital services from the phone company, ISPs can effectively provide their own high speed offerings without phone company intermediary's or concerns about special phone company tariffs.
- High Speed Internet Access for a Workgroup LAN
Often smaller companies and work groups use several separate dial-up modem connections to provide Internet access to its employees. Companies can add the Bandwidth-Server to their existing network providing each person in a workgroup LAN with rapid responsive Internet access and avoiding the redundancy of added modems and analog lines.
In addition the Bandwidth-Server lets companies achieve faster connection to the Internet than a 64k ISDN channel. Plus higher data throughputs can be realized since AMQUEST HyperModem's employ 9X V.42bis data compression.
- High Speed Remote LAN access
An ordinary modem dial-up connection feels sluggish in a network environment. A client on a Bandwidth-Server can achieve faster LAN connections that a 64k ISDN channel plus higher throughput with the HyperModem's 9X V.42bis data compression.
Financial market professionals, engineers, computer programmers and upper management are among the many who can benefit from faster and easier remote access to their corporate network.
- Faster Dial-up Desktop Video-conferencing
Using 2 or more ordinary phone lines, users can achieve faster video frame rates for a richer, higher quality video experience. In addition LAN-based videoconferencing networks can employ the Bandwidth-Server for providing remote high speed dial-up access.
In contrast to announcements about future 56K digital modem technology, AMQUEST's multi-modem approach offers full duplex data transmission -- 67k sending & receiving simultaneously. This is vital for two-way videoconferencing and can not be accomplished with 56k technology that only offers 56k in one direction.
- High Speed File Transfer
Many companies are looking for an affordable way to transfer large amounts of graphics and spreadsheet data but are held back from alternatives like the phone companies' ISDN or 56K switched digital service due to their high cost, complexity or lack of universal availability.
Now with AMQUEST's Bandwidth-Server approach, a lower cost solution, based on field proven technology is available for ad agencies, claims processors, researchers, project managers and the like.
Price and Availability
AMQUEST's Bandwidth-Server/67.2K is scheduled for November availability with a suggested list price of $3995 for an entry level system. The product will be available directly from AMQUEST Corp. and its network of authorized dealers.
