Microsystems Software announces Cyber Patrol Proxy to support Microsfot proxy server; Filtering software available at a discount for users of Microsoft proxy server

Business Wire, Oct 29, 1996

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 29, 1996--Microsystems Software Inc. today announced that its popular Internet filter, Cyber Patrol, is now available at a discount for users of Microsoft Proxy Server. Cyber Patrol Proxy is the only Internet filter now available that runs on the new Microsoft Proxy Server version 1.0.

Microsoft Proxy Server acts as a secure gateway between a LAN and the Internet. It is the only proxy server fully integrated with the Windows NT Server network operating system and is designed to provide easy and secure Internet access to desktops in organizations. Microsoft, which began beta testing the Proxy Server in June, released the server today.

Microsystems Cyber Patrol Proxy allows companies to exercise greater control over their employees access to the Web. Companies can effectively and consistently enforce corporate on-line security policies by blocking in the proxy server access to undesirable newsgroups and addresses.

"Microsystems Software strives to remain on the cutting edge of Internet filtering technology," said Richard A. Gorgens, CEO of the privately- held company. "We are pleased to have been the first to develop an Internet filter for Microsoft and to remain the only company with a product that is available now for users of Microsoft Proxy Server."

Cyber Patrol Proxy blocks sites based on a list of addresses that typically do not contribute to business productivity. The so-called CyberNOT list includes sites groups by category such as "Sports and Leisure." Customers can select from the menu of 13 categories to block specific sorts of sites and can filter sites based on time of day. So, a company wanting to block sports sites during business hours can open the sites up to employees at the end of the business day.

Cyber Patrol Proxy users also have the option of developing their own lists of sites to be filtered. Gorgens said: "Cyber Patrol Proxy gives businesses the tools to exercise control and judgment over what is appropriate business content, what is productive or unproductive." Mike Nash, Director of Marketing for Windows NT Server and Infrastructure Products at Microsoft Corp. said his company was "pleased that Microsystems has developed Cyber Patrol Proxy to help companies with their security needs."

This, coupled with the security built into Proxy Server is a big benefit to our mutual customers," Nash said.

Microsystems is offering an introductory discount to anyone buying Cyber Patrol Proxy for use with the new Microsoft Proxy Server. Cyber Patrol Proxy is priced at $495, which includes a three-month subscription to weekly updates of the CyberNOT filtering list. To qualify for the 10 percent introductory discount that runs through December 31, buyers must purchase both Cyber Patrol Proxy and a second year subscription to the filtering list ($495) for a total of $890 (after discount). -0-

Microsystems Cyber Patrol is the leading Internet filtering software for home and school use, available to 85 percent of all Americans using the Internet.

Cyber Patrol is the exclusive filtering technology used by America Online, Prodigy, CompuServe AT&T, Bell Atlantic.net, Scholastic Network and others. Cyber Patrol also was the technology selected by Raptor Systems for its Eagle firewalls.

Microsystems, selected by Inc. magazine as one of Americas 500 fastest growing privately-held companies, also makes CaLANdar for enterprise- wide scheduling software, and HandiWARE, a family of software solutions for people with disabilities.

Microsoft and Windows NT are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Microsoft Corp. in the United States and other countries.
