PCSI Ubiquity wireless modems taken out to the ball game; Cracker Jacks, the Web and wireless technology

Business Wire, Oct 3, 1996

CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1996--PCSI's wireless technology is being used to supply World Wide Web access during the Major League baseball playoff games at Jacobs Field in Cleveland.

PCSI modems will be provided to reporters from DigiKnow, the advanced products division of Marcus Advertising, for their up-to-the-minute Internet coverage of the games.

The need for a wireless solution arose when DigiKnow reporters asked Indians management for a position in the auxiliary press box which is located in the stands. This move would leave DigiKnow without its existing electronic connection in the main press box. DigiKnow contacted GTE Mobilnet to explore a wireless solution, and GTE referred them to PCSI.

PCSI agreed to supply Ubiquity wireless equipment so the reporters can give play-by-play "Cybercast" coverage from the stands, via their laptops. GTE Mobilnet will provide cellular service.

"Our cybercasters will key in events of the game as they happen, and updates will be made every 60 seconds on the Web site," said Ian Verschuren, DigiKnow technical leader. "This will provide a consistent link to users on the Internet and efficient access for the reporters."

Based on Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) technology, PCSI's Ubiquity Series offers complete wireless and wireline data and voice communications solutions for IBM, Windows, and DOS environments.

Ubiquity systems are comprised of CDPD and analog cellular components contained in one compact, lightweight module that includes a wireless CDPD modem, a cellular wireless data/fax modem, a cellular phone, a high-speed wireline data/fax modem, and a wireline voice telephone.

Verschuren sees one more plus to the Ubiquity system. "It gives us freedom to walk around the game, getting feedback and energy from the fans."

DigiKnow, located in Cleveland, is a division of Marcus Advertising and is the creator of the Indians' Web site at http://www.indians.com. The company will continue to use CDPD technology, GTE cellular service, and PCSI equipment to extend their coverage of the Cleveland Indians games into the postseason.
