Business Wire, Oct 7, 1996

TROY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1996--MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ: MAPS), the pioneer and worldwide leader in business mapping solutions, today announced the appointment of David McCann as vice president and general manager of its new Spatial Technology Division. Under McCann's leadership, the division will develop and market MapInfo's newly acquired SpatialWare server technology to enable spatial information to be managed, stored and manipulated in Oracle's market-leading database.

Prior to joining MapInfo, McCann served as vice president of Worldwide Client/Server Marketing at Unisys Corporation's $1 billion San Jose unit. Between 1994 and 1996, he was responsible for Unisys desktop, server, systems management, messaging and object software product lines, and for developing and maintaining marketing relationships with top software vendors. While at Unisys, he also headed worldwide marketing for the Unisys Information Storage Division. Previously, he was the worldwide director of marketing and planning at Zitel Corp.

McCann to Work Closely With VARS and Systems Integrators

"David McCann is the ideal person to implement MapInfo's strategy of moving our powerful mapping tools to the server-based market," said Michael D. Marvin, chairman, MapInfo. "His experience in supporting database and client/server technology across distribution channels plus his background in sales and marketing of server-based application solutions at Unisys and Zitel were integral to his selection by MapInfo. He will play a big role with the company as we roll out SpatialWare technology with our partners in the coming months."

"My goals with MapInfo are simple: establish SpatialWare technology as the leading multi-database industry standard for server based spatial analysis, enable business customers to improve their business efficiency and competitiveness and enable our channel partners to grow their profit and client satisfaction. If we can do that, MapInfo will capture a large percentage of the emerging $1.4 billion market identified by International Data Corporation."

MapInfo's SpatialWare server technology brings extensive spatial functionality to the database market, beginning with Oracle Corporation's market leading technology for the Sun Solaris and SCO Unixware environments. The SpatialWare development team will integrate its expertise in relational databases, spatial data management, SQL and UNIX operating systems with MapInfo's business mapping software solutions.

McCann and the Spatial Technology Division will be a West Coast-based business unit of MapInfo in Laguna Hills, Calif. Field sales and marketing operations to support the new division will be based throughout the United States and in London. Development will be in Toronto, Canada.
