Amdahl Attacks New Markets With Wider Range of Mainframe Servers
Business Wire, Oct 7, 1996
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1996--
Amdahl Adds Three Global Servers and Two Coupling Servers to CMOS
Family
Amdahl Corporation today announced the Millennium(TM) 400 Series--three new Global Servers and two new Coupling Servers of the company's Millennium family of CMOS-based System/390 (S/390) mainframe servers. These servers extend scalability to customers who are running mid-to-large-capacity mainframes or who need a dedicated Coupling Server for the move to a Parallel Sysplex environment.
The new models are aimed at the market for mid-sized corporate and government computer centers that want the speed, power, and cost-effectiveness of Amdahl CMOS technology in a package that is more tailored to their size requirements and business demands. They offer more upgrade options from smaller S/390 configurations and also significantly lower the entry point for Parallel Sysplex implementation, giving more customers the ability to implement this powerful systems management tool.
Jointly developed by Amdahl and Fujitsu Limited and using the same technology as the larger Millennium 500 Series servers previously announced, the new models provide all the benefits associated with CMOS technology over ECL, such as improved environmentals, smaller system footprint, and lower cost of ownership. The new Global Servers--the GS415, GS422, and GS425--will be available beginning in January 1997, and the new Coupling Servers--the CS415 and CS425--will be available the second quarter of 1997.
"These new models represent a powerful series of options and opportunities for S/390 customers," commented William Flanagan, vice president and general manager of Compatible Systems for Amdahl. "With outstanding performance, capacity, reliability, increased availability, a lower overall cost of computing, and the Amdahl commitment to exceptional service, we can now deliver the advantages of Millennium servers to a broader range of customers."
Amdahl also intends to support the VSE/ESA operating system on the Millennium 400 Series. This support provides enterprises with more flexibility to use both VSE/ESA and MVS/ESA to their best advantage.
The new servers will be sold through both direct and indirect sales channels. In many new markets, Amdahl has a partnership with distributors, value-added resellers, and sales agents who provide those markets with access to Amdahl products and services.
Designed for medium- to large-scale workloads, the Millennium family provides outstanding S/390 CMOS performance to handle mission-critical applications. The mainframe servers not only fully support OS/390 but also are excellent Web-site servers, offering the robustness and security necessary for the Internet. Another factor contributing to Millennium server performance is the unique Level 1 cache of 256 KB per CPU and Level 2 cache of 8 MB per CPU, providing a total cache capacity that is 15 to 21 times greater than that of any other vendor.
Amdahl Corporation (AMEX:AMH) provides integrated enterprise computing solutions designed to meet the needs of the leading, most compute-intensive environments around the world.
