Seagate Software Selected by Compaq for Shipment with New PD-CD Optical Drive; Provides Built-In Data Protection for Microsoft Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT and IBM OS/2 Warp
Business Wire, Sept 10, 1996
ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1996--Seagate Software, Storage Management Group (SMG), announced today their selection by Compaq Computer Corporation as the provider of backup software for the Compaq multi-purpose PD-CD optical drive. Seagate Software has the first backup application to support the PD-CD drive, which combines 650 MB of rewritable removable optical storage, and a quad-speed CD-ROM reader, in a single drive. Seagate backup software was selected for its award-winning performance, ease of use, and broad support for the leading desktop and network operating systems. The PD-CD solution with Seagate backup software is immediately available from Compaq authorized dealers.
"Optical storage has just reached a new plateau in flexibility and performance," Joseph W. Seebach, vice president of Strategic Business, Seagate Software, SMG. "The PD-CD provides customers with the highest capacity removable storage, nearly unlimited rewritability, CD-ROM compatibility, and fast backup for long-term data protection."
Compaq will pre-load Seagate Software's backup solutions onto the hard drives of the Deskpro 6000 models that include the PD-CD drive. The Seagate Software backup applications included with the drive are: -0-
Seagate Backup for Windows
Seagate Backup for Windows 95
Seagate Backup for OS/2 Warp
Seagate Backup for Windows NT Workstation -0-
A CD-ROM version of the applications is also bundled in the Compaq PD-CD Options Kit that is offered for use with Compaq Deskpro 2000, 4000 and 6000 PCs, providing broad market application for optical backup storage.
The PD-CD drive and Seagate backup software are also capable of providing preemptive data protection of valuable desktop data. When the PD-CD drive is installed in Compaq Deskpro computers that include IntelliSafe (SMART) hard drives, the Seagate software automatically initiates a backup to the optical drive upon notification by the Compaq Hardware Component Manager that a drive failure is imminent. Compaq then replaces the faulty drive under the Deskpro's pre-failure warranty. This exclusive capability, called Proactive Backup, is the result of Seagate Software's partnership in the Compaq Desktop Management Solutions Partner Program, an Intelligent Manageability solution.
"The PD-CD solution is an excellent example of vendors working in concert toward breakthrough capabilities," said Paul Gottsegen, Product Marketing Director, PC Options Division of Compaq Computer Corporation. "Together with Seagate Software, we're delivering the state-of-the-art in desktop optical storage at an industry-leading price performance ratio when compared to separate CD-ROM drives and backup devices."
