NetCarta Releases the First Multi-Platform Web Content Management Software Solution; NetCarta WebMapper 1.1 for UNIX Now Available for Sun, HP, and SGI Platforms; Complements the Company's Flagship Product, NetCarta WebMapper for Windows

Business Wire, Sept 16, 1996

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1996--NetCarta Corp., a CMGI company (NASDAQ:CMGI) and leading developer of client/server Web management and navigation solutions, announced today that it is shipping the company's powerful NetCarta WebMapper content management software for UNIX Web servers, an announcement eagerly anticipated by Web developers and administrators at large corporate sites.

The announcement was made at the NetWorld Interop exhibition in Atlanta.

NetCarta WebMapper 1.1 for UNIX is the first tool to provide comprehensive content management, analysis, and reporting capabilities on UNIX servers, the dominant platform for corporate Web sites. With its support for UNIX as well as Windows 95 and Windows NT, NetCarta WebMapper gives Webmasters the unique ability to manage Web content and structure across multiple platforms.

New to this version of NetCarta WebMapper are powerful analysis and reporting capabilities that give users more control in maintaining a high-quality Web site. Webmasters can use its graphical HTML interface or -- for even finer control and automation -- can opt to use the command-line utility.

NetCarta WebMapper 1.1 provides a flexible solution for managing and tracking information on a dynamic Web site. The program creates a NetCarta WebMap of a Web site, a catalog of all the resources in the site, that is used as the foundation for the analysis it performs.

From the map, NetCarta WebMapper generates HTML-formatted reports that detail site properties such as the basic structure and content of the site, the size of the site (the number of pages, graphics, audio files, and so on), and the links to and from the site's resources, including broken, duplicate, or obsolete links. Additionally, when users compare two maps of a site, the comparison reports specify which objects have been added, changed, or orphaned. HTML reports can be viewed with any browser and distributed freely.

"NetCarta is pioneering a new software category that addresses the management and analysis of Web site content and structure," said Thomas Tansy, vice president of marketing, NetCarta Corp. "Web content is a moving target, with information provided by a diverse group of authors. NetCarta WebMapper's spidering and mapping technology is unique in its ability to solve the problems that result from this dynamic environment."

According to Dave Hollander, an Internet Architect at Hewlett-Packard Company, "NetCarta WebMapper gives us a good tool for analyzing the topography on our corporate Web site, which spans several thousand pages. NetCarta WebMapper helps us keep better track of all the information submitted by the hundreds of HP business groups that provide content for the site, giving us the ability to track and generate reports on links, errors, and complexities."

NetCarta WebMapper 1.1 for UNIX uses the exclusive NetCarta WebMap technology to reveal a site's structure in HTML format, show relationships among Web objects, track and manage links, and facilitate content management of local and remote sites from anywhere on the Web. NetCarta WebMapper generates a series of linked reports on the site's content, including such information as site statistics, duplicate/obsolete resources, changed resources, content profile by media type, and more.

A linked table of contents and site index are also provided. Entire sites can be copied onto a local hard drive, CD-ROM, or any location within a local or networked file system to manage the Web development process from testing through live production.

NetCarta WebMapper 1.1 for UNIX supports SGI IRIX 5.3 and 6.2, Sun Solaris 2.5, and HP-UX 9.05. It supports HTTP server programs including Apache 1.1, NCSA 1.5, Open Market Secure WebServer 2.0 and all Netscape servers (check the NetCarta Web site for a current list) and popular browsers including Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic. NetCarta WebMapper 1.1 for UNIX sells for $999.00 and is available for purchase through the NetCarta Merchant at http://www.netcarta.com. An evaluation version can be downloaded from the NetCarta Web site at http://www.netcarta.com.
