RadiSys Announces Long-Life Baseboard in Popular "Baby-AT" Form Factor; Zappa-E Extends RadiSys' Family of Embedded, Long-Life Baseboards

Business Wire, Sept 17, 1996

BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1996--RadiSys Corporation, a leading supplier of long-life embedded computer solutions for OEMs, today announced the immediate availability of the RadiSys Zappa-E baseboard, an Intel Pentium processor-based PCI computer that is 100% compatible with the Intel Advanced/ZE motherboard.

The RadiSys Zappa-E baseboard joins the RadiSys Marl board in a growing family of high-performance baseboards that RadiSys is committed to supply for an extended number of years for long-life OEM embedded applications.

The RadiSys Zappa-E board is 100% mechanically, electrically and BIOS compatible with the Intel Advanced/ZE board so that OEMs using this product can migrate to the RadiSys long-life baseboard without the need for engineering modifications to their product. This represents significant savings in both time and money for the OEM. The OEM can develop an embedded application using Intel's state-of-the-art Pentium technology delivered in the popular Baby-AT form factor and be assured of a long term supply of a 100% compatible product for the life of their design. The Zappa-E baseboard is designed specifically to eliminate mid-life product revisions, reduce engineering change order (ECO) overhead, simplify software maintenance and achieve the lowest possible cost over the lifetime of the embedded application.

"RadiSys is keenly aware of the problems facing OEMs who have developed products based on standard PC motherboards when those motherboards reach end-of-life," said Glen Myers, RadiSys president and CEO. "RadiSys Zappa-E baseboard provides an immediate, cost-effective migration solution for those customers who would otherwise need to redesign their products because of the end-of-life announcement of the Intel Advanced/ZE motherboard."

The RadiSys Zappa-E board currently supports 133-, 150- and 166MHz Pentium processors. RadiSys offers the Zappa-E board to customers with or without a processor. The Zappa-E board includes a 82437FX controller and four SIMM sockets to support memory options up to 128MB. Integrated standard connectors are present for serial, parallel, mouse and keyboard ports, as well as standard connectors for power, IDE drives and floppy drives, and for such connections as reset, speaker and LEDs. The board also contains four ISA slots, three PCI slots and one slot that can be used as either an ISA or PCI slot. The board is shipped with the BIOS in a boot-block flash memory device that supports a number of special features such as IDE configuration, PCI autoconfiguration, multiple languages, ISA Plug and Play and Advanced Power Management. As with all RadiSys baseboards, the Zappa-E board includes standard gold-plated connectors and headers for best long term reliability.

Price and Availability

RadiSys will offer the Zappa-E baseboard through RadiSys' group of franchised electronics distributors, providing this channel with a strong opportunity to add value by integrating high quality Pentium processor-based systems for OEM applications.

The RadiSys Zappa-E-0 baseboard (without processor, cache or DRAM) is available immediately through distribution at a suggested resale price of $386 for quantities of 100.

RadiSys is a leading supplier of embedded computer technology used by OEMs in manufacturing automation, telecommunications, medical equipment, transportation, test and measurement and retail automation.
