TIBCO Named by IDC as Largest Message-Oriented Middleware Vendor; Worldwide Middleware Market Expected to Reach $5.9 Billion by the Year 2000 According to IDC Study
Business Wire, Sept 17, 1996
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1996--TIBCO Inc., an international leader and pioneer in communications middleware, today announced that a new research study from International Data Corporation (IDC) has identified TIBCO as the largest vendor of message-oriented middleware (MOM) worldwide. According to IDC's Enterprise System Management study entitled "Middleware: 1996 Worldwide Markets and Trends," TIBCO holds 25.5% of the MOM market, based on worldwide software revenues. IDC estimates the worldwide market for middleware overall in 1995 at approximately $879 million.
IDC projects the MOM market will expand by a 36.7% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) over the next five years. One significant factor shaping IDC's five-year forecast is publish and subscribe, technology that allows users to share information in real-time. Publish and subscribe, which TIBCO innovated over 10 years ago, is a key enabler for businesses that rely on event-driven computing to notify users of change, as it occurs, without requiring users to request updates. One of the earliest applications of publish and subscribe occurs in the financial sector, where timely access to market data is mission-critical.
"IDC believes the potential of the publish-and-subscribe model to automate new kinds of applications across all industry segments has just begun to be tapped," said Ed Acly, analyst at IDC and author of the study.
"The results of this study validate our position as the pioneer and leader in middleware technology," said Vivek Ranadivi, president and CEO of TIBCO. "Companies worldwide recognize that TIBCO is setting the standard for the way information is accessed and utilized, regardless of its complexity or location."
During 1995, the MOM market underwent a modest growth of approximately 30%. IDC cites other drivers of the MOM market, including:
-- support for mobile and wireless computing
-- growing partnerships
-- customers' requirements to scale up
-- object technology

TIBCO Products
TIBCO develops and markets a full range of tools and applications based on its patented TIB (The Information Bus) technology. A highly sophisticated program-to-program interface and communications platform, TIB technology enables applications to publish information, such as stock prices or competitive data, to other applications which express an interest in the information. Utilizing TIBCO's Subject-Based Addressing, TIB technology directs messages to their destinations over local networks or the Internet, so that application processes can communicate without details of network addresses or connections.
Using TIB technology, TIBCO's products provide organizations with a proven middleware infrastructure for handling complex, distributed messaging efficiently and reliably. TIBCO's core middleware products include -- Enterprise Toolkit, a suite of enterprise-class, object-oriented middleware tools for building and modeling flexible, integrated communications-enabled distributed applications and Rendezvous, an API toolkit that allows C, C and Java programmers to quickly develop and deploy distributed applications with robust messaging capabilities.
