Xpoint announces its BusBIOS Enterprise Server Solution based upon Cisco's licensed Virtual LAN technology

Business Wire, Sept 18, 1996

BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 1996--Xpoint Technologies Inc., (Boca Raton) Wednesday announced its Enterprise Server Solutions for Windows NT Server and NetWare as the latest additions to its growing family of BusBIOS(TM) acceleration solutions.

Xpoint's (pronounced crosspoint) Enterprise Server Solution integrates Cisco's licensed Virtual LAN (VLAN) technology for use with its BusBIOS-enabled intelligent Fast Ethernet server adapters. VLAN technology allows network managers to group users and computers into communities of interest or logical workgroups independent of their physical locations. VLANs offer greater scalability, performance, configuration flexibility, and significant network cost savings. Xpoint's Enterprise Server Solution provides significant cost and performance advantages by providing a means, for the first time, for enterprise servers to migrate to the backbone of Cisco's VLAN networks. Prior to Xpoint's Enterprise Server Solution, it was not possible to attach file servers directly to the enterprise backbone.

"With the introduction of Xpoint's Enterprise Server Solution network designers can now centrally attach enterprise servers to backbone links in Cisco's VLAN networks," said Joe Hielscher, manager of switching software at Cisco Systems Inc. "Centrally attached servers, such as intranet web servers, result in direct user benefits in terms of optimal performance, ease-of-management and reduced cost of ownership."

"Xpoint intends to integrate Disk-to-LAN acceleration into its Enterprise Server Solution. The resulting Disk-to-VLAN solution will deliver scaleable I/O performance from workgroup servers to gigabit payload enterprise servers," said Frank Wang, CEO Xpoint Technologies.

Xpoint's BusBIOS family of server acceleration solutions are designed to streamline data transfers and avoid logjams caused by traditional file server input/output processing.
