OR Technology's a:drive is first to comply with Phoenix Technologies' new ATAPI standard; 120MB bootable floppy disk drive is available now
Business Wire, Sept 19, 1996
CAMPBELL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 1996--OR Technology Inc. on Thursday announced that its product, the a:drive, an LS-120 floppy disk drive capable of storing 120MB of data, supports Phoenix Technologies Ltd.'s new ATAPI Removable Media BIOS specification.
This specification standardizes the way ATAPI random access devices are controlled by the BIOS and enables the 120MB a:drive to be configured as either a primary or secondary floppy drive device.
"OR Technology's 120MB a:drive(tm) is the only product available today that provides a bootable replacement for the floppy disk drive. It is the first ATAPI-compliant drive to market that supports Phoenix Technologies' removable media BIOS specification," said John Haughey, OR Technology president and chief executive officer.
"With this achievement, we can now satisfy growing customer demand for an internal bootable solution that is also compatible with 720KB and 1.44MB floppy disk drives."
With Phoenix Technologies' ATAPI Removable Media BIOS and OR Technology's a:drive, users can boot their computers with legacy 3.5-inch 720KB and 1.44MB media or new LS-120 media.
"OR Technology is one of the first companies to implement this specification," said George Adams, vice president of marketing for Phoenix Technologies. "The LS-120's high storage capacity allows PC users to store large critical system files and adds the ability to boot and restore basic operations from a single disk. This provides a new level of information security for users."
The a:drive from OR Technology was designed to replace the floppy disk drive. While its outward appearance is almost indistinguishable from that of its floppy technology counterpart, the a:drive achieves 120MB of storage when used with LS-120 media.
At the same time, the a:drive is compatible with current 3.5-inch floppy disk technology. It can read and write to both 720KB and 1.44MB diskettes, providing an upward migration path for millions of personal computer users and the billions of diskettes they own.
The a:drive is currently available from OR Technology through authorized distributors at an MSRP of $210. LS-120 media from Imation is available now at an MSRP of $19.95.
OR Technology, with headquarters in Campbell, sells, designs and manufactures data storage products using laser servo technology for which it holds significant patents. OR Technology markets the a:drive, a product compatible with current floppy diskettes that stores up to 120MB of data on a single diskette.
