CUC INTERNATIONAL INC. AND MICROSOFT CORP. ENTER INTO STRATEGIC ALLIANCE; CUC's Entertainment Division to provide sales organization for local advertisements on Microsoft Cityscape
Business Wire, Sept 23, 1996
STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1996--CUC International Inc. announced today that it has entered into a strategic alliance with Microsoft Corp. Under the terms of the agreement, CUC's Entertainment Publications division will be the sales organization for local advertisements on Cityscape, the code name for Microsoft's online city entertainment guides.
Cityscape will feature information about movies, restaurants, music, arts and local entertainment events. The first city guide will debut in Seattle during the first quarter of calendar 1997. Microsoft anticipates that guides will be available in New York, Boston and San Francisco by mid-year, with additional guides available in other cities by year end. Cityscape will be available on the World Wide Web and The Microsoft Network(TM).
"We believe that Microsoft Cityscape will be a compelling promotional vehicle for our merchant network," stated Bob Sarkie, president of CUC's Entertainment Publications division. "We've tested the sales process, and the results were very successful. Restaurateurs showed a strong level of interest in reaching this highly targeted demographic group."
Frank Schott, Cityscape product unit manager, commented, "CUC's Entertainment(R) sales organization has more than 1,200 sales representatives and over 35 years of experience connecting consumers with local merchants. Working together is a perfect fit. CUC offers us access to a network of 100,000 merchants in more than 100 cities."
Bob Sarkie added, "We will also be working with Microsoft to develop interactive Entertainment(R) programs that will be available to Cityscape users in the future. The excitement here lies with the potential new distribution channel for Entertainment(R) memberships."
