Lockheed Martin Electronic Systems Canada wins contract for new U.S. Navy aircraft computer
Business Wire, Sept 30, 1996
MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept.30, 1996--Lockheed Martin Electronic Systems Canada, a business unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE: LMT), has been awarded a $3 million subcontract from Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems in Eagan, Minn., to build a new computer for the U.S. Navy's S-3B Viking antisubmarine warfare aircraft. Follow-on production orders are expected to bring the program's total value to $60 million for the Canadian unit.
The subcontract extends the joint effort by the Montreal and Eagan units to successfully develop and integrate the new AN/AYK-23 computer under a Canadian-U.S. defense development sharing arrangement to upgrade the capabilities of the sub-hunting S-3B Viking aircraft. The new computer will allow the U.S. Navy to improve the Viking's mission software and to take advantage of new avionics subsystems having capabilities that could not have been accommodated without the AN/AYK-23. The service eventually intends to replace existing computers with the new computer aboard its fleet of 120 S-3B Vikings.
Work on the 16-month contract, which includes designing the new computer as well as building and testing three initial production models, will be performed at Lockheed Martin Electronic Systems Canada's Winnipeg operation.
