HP Colorado T4000 Tape Storage System Now Available in External Model and With NT Support; T4000es Provides Users with Portability in an Easy-to-use Backup Solution

Business Wire, Sept 30, 1996

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1996-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced a portable, external version of its HP Colorado T4000s 8GB QIC tape drive. The new drive, the HP Colorado T4000es, combines Travan minicartridge technology and SCSI-2 performance with support for DOS, Windows, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems.

This extended-storage solution is targeted at "power" PC users; workgroups and LANs; and at industries such as medical, insurance and legal that require reliable unattended backup of data files.

Using latest-generation Travan technology, the HP Colorado T4000es expands minicartridge capacity to 4GB native and 8GB compressed using Travan TR-4 minicartridges. With its SCSI-2 interface, the T4000es significantly increases backup speed compared to previous-generation minicartridge drives. Its 514KB/second burst SCSI data-transfer rate is approximately four times faster than floppy-interface systems, providing typical backup speeds of 25MB/minute to 35MB/minute on Pentium(TM) systems. Using a typical Pentium system, users can back up a 1GB hard drive in about 30 minutes to 40 minutes.

"The T4000es provides ease of installation and portability with an impressive speed and low price per megabyte for today's computer user," said John A. Boose, general manager of HP's Colorado Memory Systems Division within the Information Storage Group. "It also gives users ample capacity to grow into the backup requirements of tomorrow and beyond."

Both the T4000s and T4000es are now supported natively in NT 4.0, in addition to being supported for LANtastic, Windows 95 and Windows for Workgroups. A driver for NT, Version 3.51 is available free of charge on HP's Web site at http://www.hp.com/go/colorado_support.> The HP Colorado T4000es is a 5.25-inch half-height form-factor drive. The system includes Colorado's full-featured backup applications for Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and DOS operating systems; a SCSI data cable; two stands; manuals; a SCSI terminator; an autoranging power supply; and one preformatted TR-4 minicartridge (U.S. $51). An optional HP Colorado brand SCSI-2 controller board also is available.

U.S. PRICES AND AVAILABILITY

The HP Colorado T4000es is scheduled for availability on Oct. 1. It has a two-year limited warranty and a list price of $559. The list price of the optional SC50Q SCSI controller board is $65.
