SingleTrac and Microsoft form collaborative relationship; Companies to co-publish PC game titles
Business Wire, Sept 9, 1996
SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1996--SingleTrac Entertainment Technologies Inc., a real-time, 3D interactive entertainment software provider, Monday announced a landmark product licensing and investment agreement with Microsoft Corp.
This marks the first-ever equity investment in a games company by Microsoft.
Under the terms of this unique agreement, the two companies will collaborate on the development and marketing of SingleTrac's original intellectual properties to be co-published and exclusively distributed worldwide for the Windows(R) 95 platform by Microsoft.
The relationship, already initiated with two game titles currently in production, teams SingleTrac's proven game development talents with Microsoft's worldwide marketing and distribution presence in the PC and online consumer marketplace.
"This agreement puts a powerful product agreement in place which fits perfectly with SingleTrac's strategic growth plans," said Michael Ryder, chairman and president of SingleTrac. "The company's highly successful relationship with Sony Interactive Entertainment allowed SingleTrac to set the standard in 3D, next-generation games for the PlayStation(TM) game console. This new partnership with Microsoft allows us to exploit the capability of the PC even more dramatically. The inclusion of online and networked play will bring new levels of game play depth to the planned products."
Ed Fries, general manager of the games group at Microsoft, said, "SingleTrac's leadership in combining realtime, 3D graphics with great gameplay fits with Microsoft's vision of interactive entertainment for the multimedia PC.
"In a short period of time, SingleTrac has not only proved to be a dynamic new player," continued Fries, but they have also demonstrated their ability to exploit emerging technologies and remain on schedule, making this an attractive collaboration."
In addition to the co-publishing agreement, Microsoft has chosen to make an equity investment in SingleTrac. According to Todd Kelly, executive vice president and chief financial officer of SingleTrac, "Microsoft's investment in SingleTrac, the first of its kind in a games company, signals a long-term commitment to the company and the industry.
"With Microsoft's capital infusion, SingleTrac has already begun to increase its product output capacity and execute its publishing strategy." SingleTrac will begin publishing its game properties for dedicated game consoles under its own brand in 1997.
SingleTrac Entertainment Technologies Inc., based in Salt Lake City, develops and publishes next-generation interactive entertainment software for the set top console, multimedia PC, and online interactive entertainment markets.
SingleTrac's first two titles published by Sony Computer Entertainment; Twisted Metal(TM) and WarHawk(TM) are available for the Sony PlayStation(TM) game console. Twisted Metal 2(TM) and Jet Moto(TM) will be released fourth quarter '96 for the Sony PlayStation. -0-
