Sequent completes Oracle test with 4-terabyte data warehouse
Business Wire, Sept 9, 1996
BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1996--Expanding on its drive to provide data warehouse solutions for the world's largest commercial customers, Sequent Computer Systems announced today it earned the distinctive Oracle Warehouse Terabyte Test-to-Scale award by demonstrating a 4-terabyte (TB) data warehouse.
The Oracle Warehouse Terabyte Test-to-Scale program recognizes a select group of vendors that are capable of supporting a database containing one terabyte of raw data, an accurate representation of the largest data warehousing applications. Sequent successfully completed the series of Oracle tests designed to simulate the features that are most critical to data warehouse customers, including data loading, index creation, creation of summary data, and complex query processing.
For the test, Sequent used a 10-processor Symmetry 5000 SE80 SMP system running Oracle's Universal Server (release 7.3.2) and 64 CLARiiON RAID 5 disk array subsystems, each supporting over 64 GB of data. The database's largest table was almost 800 GB and contained over 6 billion records.
The database was 2.5 TB in size, not including mirroring. This database took advantage of Sequent capabilities to address large data files. In the Terabyte Test-to-Scale project, Sequent was able to incorporate files up to 9 GB into the Oracle database. This enhancement allows Sequent to build larger Oracle databases with fewer files.
"Sequent's impressive Test-to-Scale performance reaffirms why Sequent is recognized as one of the leading data warehouse platforms" said Frank Clugage, vice president of enterprise servers in Oracle's Server Technologies Division. "Together, the Oracle Universal Database and Sequent's enterprise servers provide our joint customers with a proven data warehouse solution."
The Terabyte Test-to-Scale program further validates Sequent's long-term success in the very large-scale warehouse market. In fact, several Sequent customers have Oracle data warehouses up to or greater than 1TB in production today.
