Corel Office for Java Certified 100 Percent Pure Java
Business Wire, April 2, 1997
OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1997--(TSE:COS/NASDAQ:COSFF) Corel Corporation's Corel(R) Office for Java(TM) has been certified as 100 percent pure Java(TM) by JavaSoft. The 100 percent Pure Java(TM) Program is a marketing and technology effort designed specifically for developers of Java software applications. It is intended to give developers guidance on how to write 100 percent Pure Java applications and to provide them with marketing support once the applications are ready for the marketplace.
The office suite, which includes Corel(R) WordPerfect(R) for Java(TM), Corel(R) Quattro(R) Pro for Java(TM), Corel(R) Presentations(TM) for Java(TM), InfoCentral(TM) for Java(TM) and CorelCHART(TM) for Java(TM), is the first suite of office applications ever written for the Java platform.
"Corel Office for Java is revolutionary because it offers users the benefits of full cross-platform compatibility. Its small size and extensible feature set make it the ideal office productivity environment for the emerging server-centric thin client architecture," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. "We are excited Corel Office for Java was the first program to be awarded the 100 percent Pure Java certification."
"We are happy to have Corel on board as part of the team of companies adding to the momentum of Java computing," says Bud Tribble, VP/Chief Architect Java(TM) Systems for Sun Microsystem Computer Company. "Corel has made a dynamic commitment to the Java platform and we are looking forward to establishing an ongoing relationship with them."
This initiative has already gained widespread industry support. The program complements the efforts that JavaSoft has undertaken since 1995 to ensure that all implementations of Java maintain compatibility. The program is extremely important as it ensures that there is always a way for developers to write in Pure Java so that the multi-platform nature of Java is preserved and enhanced. For developers, this program ensures that they will be able to write programs once, and have them run anywhere, regardless of the underlying operating system.
The program includes an assortment of elements which will:
Educate the industry about the benefits of creating 100 percent Pure Java applications.
Provide assistance to developers attempting to create 100 percent Pure Java applications.
Provide testing and certification for 100 percent Pure Java applications.
Provide use of an exclusive "100 percent Pure Java" logo for inclusion on product packaging and marketing materials.
Provide web site exposure through the "100 percent Pure Java Hall of Fame" network.
Provide technical and marketing updates, hotlines and related affinity services.
