One-On-One Sports and Unwired Planet make Statszone service available to mobile phone users; One-On-One Sports' Statszone service to be available to users of AT&T PocketNet service and Bell Atlantic/NYNEX Mobile Cellscape service
Business Wire, April 22, 1997
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1997-- One-On-One Sports, Inc., the creator of the nation's largest live 24-hour sports talk radio network, and Unwired Planet, Inc. (UP), the innovator in wireless Internet access, today announced that One-On-One Sports' Statszone(SM) service will be available on Unwired Planet's UP.Link Platform(TM) to users of smartphone services such as AT&T(R) PocketNet(TM) and Bell Atlantic/NYNEX Mobile Cellscape(SM).
One-On-One Sports' innovative Statszone Web site (http://www.statszone.com) provides visitors with access to a wealth of databased sports information. Last football season some 4,000 Statszone account holders received customized reports weekly. Applying this philosophy to the wireless world is a natural next step for One-On-One Sports. Now, wherever they are, sports fans can access live play-by-play descriptions and statistics.
Unwired Planet's breakthrough platform enables mass-market wireless devices, such as mobile phones and two-way pagers, to access Internet-based information, corporate electronic mail and other information stored on industry standard Web servers.
Several telecommunications companies, including AT&T Wireless Services, GTE Mobilnet, and Bell Atlantic/NYNEX Mobile, are introducing wireless Internet services based on the UP.Link(TM) Platform. Device manufacturers such as Mitsubishi Wireless, PCSI, QUALCOMM and Samsung Electronics are including the UP.Browser(TM) in their mobile phones so their customers can instantly connect to the Internet.
"Access to Statszone underscores the power of a wireless, portable device like the AT&T PocketNet Phone," said Kent Hellebust, director of PocketNet Products for AT&T Wireless Services. "Unwired Planet and One-On-One Sports have created a particularly valuable service for people who need to stay on top of the late-breaking sports news and scores anytime."
"This is a milestone in the evolution of sports journalism," said Chris Brennan, chairman, president and CEO of One-On-One Sports, Inc. "For the first time, the rich content of Statszone will be available to users on their mobile phones, anywhere and at anytime."
"We welcome One-On-One Sports to the family of HDML developers," said Ben Linder, vice president of marketing for Unwired Planet(TM). "Their site is a great example of how simple it is to enrich Web sites with HDML."
How It Works
The UP.Link Platform allows mobile handheld devices to browse live Internet- or intranet-based information, for personal and business use. Web site information is merely formatted using Handheld Device Markup Language(TM) (HDML(TM)) to make it visible to mobile phones running the UP.Browser. HDML is an open markup language optimized for interactive Web access from wireless handheld devices, such as mobile phones and pagers.
HDML-based services can be deployed rapidly since they can be created using existing Internet content, development tools and programming skills. HDML is in use by One-On-One Sports and hundreds of other Web developers today, including Data Broadcasting Corporation, InfoSpace, and The Weather Underground.
