Adaptec develops Gigabit Ethernet adapter for servers; expands company's server NIC leadership

Business Wire, April 28, 1997

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 1997--Adaptec (NASDAQ:ADPT) today unveiled a prototype Gigabit Ethernet adapter, the ANA-69100.

The ANA-69100 is a single-port network interface card (NIC) capable of Gigabit per second (Gb/s) data throughput. The ANA-69100 is pre-standard Gigabit and is targeted at server manufacturers who want to begin developing Gigabit Ethernet solutions into their high-end server products. Gigabit Ethernet promises greater bandwidth to alleviate network bottlenecks.

"By providing a Gigabit NIC to manufacturers early, Adaptec is establishing early market leadership and allowing customers to evaluate Gigabit solutions throughout the enterprise," said David Mendenhall, marketing manager for network products at Adaptec Inc. "Because Gigabit will first be used in high-end servers, and because Adaptec is heavily focused on providing server NICs, we think we are uniquely positioned to create success in this market."

About the Adapter

Adaptec's Gigabit Ethernet adapter (ANA-69100) for PCI systems can move information across a network at up to 1 Gb/s. To optimize performance, the ANA-69100 has 64KB buffer memory. The ANA-69100 complies with PCI 2.1 specifications and is based on a 64-bit architecture with both 64-bit address and 64-bit data capabilities.

The adapter supports half and full duplex operation, performs TCP checksum for receive and transmit, supports IEEE 802.1q virtual LAN, and supports IEEE 802.3x flow control. The ANA-69100 is being interoperability tested and tuned with Cisco infrastructure products.

The ANA-69100 supports Windows NT, NetWare, SCO UNIXWARE, and OS/2.

Availability

The ANA-69100 will be available is sample to server manufacturers in late summer 1997. The adapter will ship with Adaptec's Duralink Software Suite, which provides Failover and Manager utilities.
