VXtreme teams with TIBCO to integrate video streaming and multicast push web-based technologies; alliance enables push delivery of video for business-to-business applications
Business Wire, April 29, 1997
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 1997--VXtreme, Inc., the leading developer of high-quality streaming video for Intranet and Internet applications, today added reliable multicast push of video metadata to its Web Theater products through the announcement of a technology alliance with TIBCO, Inc., a premier provider of publish/subscribe middleware.
Video metadata is descriptive information about video clips, such as announcements and headlines. This alliance brings the power of video information quickly, precisely and easily to the desktop.
The integraion of these technologies enables the first-ever multicast delivery of subject-based video and metadata to the corporate desktop. TIB/ Rendezvous provides subject-based addressing capabilities, allowing users to specify exact information needs based upon a subject like "UPDATES.MARKET.NASDAQ."
VXtreme's Web Theater solutions provide the necessary video streaming technology to enable individuals or corporations to receive broadcast-quality news clips on their PCs without latency problems normally associated with video push technologies.
"Corporations and individuals are requiring faster and more reliable delivery of information to allow them to meet mission-critical deadlines associated with the growing prevalence of the Internet," said Pete Mountanos, CEO of VXtreme.
"VXtreme has always provided a high-quality video product with our Web Theater video streaming solutions. However, our alliance with a technology leader like TIBCO will further empower our customers with the ability to receive the same level of quality, but with tailored, viable and useful video-based information to meet their needs."
Applications that will best be able to leverage this technology breakthrough include advertisers and news services such as Reuters. Today's push technology offers these advertisers and news services with only general topics which they can push to computer users.
In most cases, the quality of the content is limited by the inability to provide enough compression to avoid latency or delays in the applications that are being used as the content is pushed.
The combination of VXtreme's video solutions and TIBCO's subject-based capabilities will create an Internet/Intranet environment where news services and advertisers can drill down to specific interests of users and send only those pieces of information that directly match the individual.
"This is an exciting breakthrough in push technologies because it saves both the information provider and the computer user from sending or receiving needless information that will result in higher costs and loss of time," said Vivek Ranadive, chairman and chief executive officer of TIBCO, Inc. "The combination of TIB/Rendezvous and Web Theater will give corporations the ability to provide scalable, industrial-strength, business video services at a reasonable cost."
