Hornall Anderson Design Works Completes Global Web Site Redesign for Novell

Business Wire, August 25, 1997

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1997--

-- Site overhaul adds brand consistency and flexibility --

Hornall Anderson Design Works, a Seattle-based marketing and communications firm, today announced completion of a site-wide redesign for Novell, the Provo, Utah-based networking giant.

The new design provides a strong corporate and brand identity, consistent navigation system, and allows for users from over 50 different groups to publish content to a single site which has a common look and feel. The Novell website includes over 35,000 pages and is used by thousands of individuals every day.

"It was our desire to improve Novell's website," said Cheryl Quist, director of electronic marketing for Novell. "We needed a new look that is clean, emphasizes our corporate identity, and facilitates the delivery of useful content and applications. We wanted the new design to demonstrate Novell's leadership in the Internet/intranet market. Hornall Anderson designed Novell's intranet, called InnerWeb, and we partnered with them again to deliver on our goals for the new design of our external site."

Hornall Anderson, who competed against four other well-known web design groups for the Novell account, concentrated on improving three key areas on the site: visual consistency, navigation and dynamic content. "Novell's site is enormous and loaded with information," said Chris Sallquist, Hornall Anderson's director of online media. "Our first challenge was to make the site easier to move around in. Secondly, we had to create an interface that represents the Novell brand, but doesn't hamper their internal developers with rigid, hard-to-implement guidelines."

Reflecting a trend in online design, a significant portion of Hornall Anderson's efforts centered on the creation of coded templates that can be easily populated by anyone within the company. "Maximum flexibility was key," says Bill Rozier, Novell's director of corporate branding & graphics. "Because of our size and need for rapid information delivery worldwide, we needed a template system that makes it easy to publish online, without the worry of each page looking like came from a different company."

The new Novell site also incorporates a custom version of the NewsBreaker(TM) Java applet by Premiere Internet (www.newsbreaker.com). The NewsBreaker applet gives Novell the ability to push newsworthy headlines and related images to site visitors.

Novell (NYSE:NVL) is one of the largest players in the networking industry. Their site can be found at www.novell.com .
