HP Web JetAdmin 3.0 First to Allow LAN LAN Administrators to Install and Configure Network Printers Remotely from a Web Browser; Breakthrough Features Include Universal Printer Support and Integrated Web Server

Business Wire, August 25, 1997

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1997-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced HP Web JetAdmin 3.0 printer-management software, which saves time for network administrators by simplifying and extending network printer management. The software's advanced features include remote print-path configuration of network printers; universal printer support; and integrated HyperText Transfer Protocol Daemon (HTTPD) Web server software, which eliminates the need for a commercial Web-server software package. The software also will incorporate Java(TM) applets, allowing for real-time device-status feedback.

HP Web JetAdmin 3.0 enables network administrators to monitor and maintain network printers proactively for less printer downtime and higher end-user satisfaction. This remote peripheral-management capability is a key element of HP's strategy to lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) for printing.

"HP envisions a day when LAN administrators can simply and remotely manage all of their network-connected peripherals with a single browser-based management tool," said Rich Raimondi, general manager for HP's Hardcopy Solutions and Services Business Unit. "Building universal printer support into HP Web JetAdmin is another example of HP leading the industry toward that vision."

MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED

HP Web JetAdmin 3.0 includes a broad array of new technologies that make it the most advanced web-based network peripheral-management solution available today. Some of these technologies include the following:

-- Simple and remote print-path configuration -- Network
administrators now can install, configure, manage and
diagnose HP JetDirect-connected printers, regardless of
platform, via a common Web browser.

-- Universal printer support -- The software will support
discovery and management of all standard management
          information base (MIB)-compliant printers, allowing
network administrators to manage all of those printers
          using a single management tool.

-- Integrated Web server -- An HTTPD will reside in HP Web
          JetAdmin 3.0, enabling a less-expensive, one-step
          software installation process.

-- Java applets increase functionality -- HP is optimizing
the use of Java applets in Web JetAdmin 3.0 to provide
          network administrators with the productivity-enhancing
tools they require. For example, the new software
          updates device-status changes automatically,
eliminating the need to reload the status page as new
devices are connected to the network.

-- Batch configuration -- Network administrators now will
be able to configure printer settings for multiple
          JetDirect-connected printers simultaneously,
simplifying the installation process and saving time.

-- Additional peripheral support -- HP Web JetAdmin 3.0
will include the ability to discover and display the
status of other peripherals, such as the HP Network
ScanJet 5 scanner, and future HP printers.
