Amdahl Enhances Windows NT Performance for its Data Center Class Servers; Increased CPU Cache Provides Up to 22 Percent Improvement for Mission-Critical Applications Like SAP

Business Wire, August 25, 1997

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1997--Amdahl Corporation today announced that it will integrate Intel's new 200 MHz Pentium Pro(R) Processor with one megabyte of cache in its EnVista(TM) server family. Amdahl's measurements, using the Ziff Davis ServerBench 4.0 benchmark suite for application servers, demonstrated an increase in capacity of 22.4 percent over current systems that use the 200 MHz Pentium Pro with 512 kilobytes of cache. The larger cache size is especially important for high-capacity, high-availability datacenter workloads such as SAP R/3, OLTP, data warehousing and decision support. The new processor will be available with the deskside EnVista FS and rack mount EnVista FS/R in the fourth quarter of 1997 and will support highly available, highly scalable clustering configurations using Microsoft(R) WolfPack or Lifekeeper(R) for EnVista.

The one megabyte cache boosts the performance of memory-intensive applications like SAP, providing extra capacity to support more users, more transactions, and more complex queries on a single server as well as across clustered SMP servers. OVerall, the improved capabilities can enhance system scalability and capacity for Amdahl customers, eliminating the need for premature hardware upgrades. In a typical environment running multiple Windows NT(R) based servers, this can dramatically reduce their overall total cost of ownership.

"With our Systems/390 compatible Millennium Global Servers, Amdahl has demonstrated the importance of scalable cache sizes for large commercial applications," said Chuck Foley, Vice President, Systems Marketing, Amdahl Corporation. "Now, customers deploying enterprise-wide applications in Windows NT environments can enjoy similar benefits using EnVista servers."

This is another example of the Amdahl tradition of best-of-breed offerings to our customers through technology solutions. Amdahl continues to raise the bar by providing products and services that help customers create customized solutions that help gain a competitive advantage in their industries.

A single EnVista server node supports up to four 200 MHz Pentium Pro processors, 4 GB of Fast Page Mode memory, and terabytes of high-performance Fibre Channel storage using Amdahl's LVS 4500(TM) Storage System. The 200 MHz Pentium Pro with 1 MB cache will be available as an option for new purchases and as an upgrade to existing systems.
