McAFEE ANNOUNCES FIRST SERVER-BASED NETWORK SECURITY SUITE; NetShield Security Suite Offers Both Virus and Security Protection For Application Servers, Internet Gateways and Groupware Environments; New Management Tools Simplify Administration

Business Wire, August 26, 1997

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1997--McAfee (NASDAQ:MCAF) today announced its NetShield Security Suite (NSS), the first product to offer both virus and hacker security protection for application servers, Internet gateways and groupware computing environments. NSS integrates six new products with a common administration console which simplifies network administration and product updates. Finally, NSS is available at the unprecedented price of $12 per user for a 1000-user site, a fraction of what users would pay for individual, non-integrated products.

With the rise of networked computing, networks have become the carriers for virus infections as well as hacker intrusions. Whether viruses are attached to e-mails, stored in documents on file servers, or downloaded from the Internet, networked servers are often the starting point for malicious activity into an organization. NSS integrates new, server-based software to prevent virus attacks and hacker intrusions before they can impact an organization.

According to Meta Group analyst, Kurt Schlegel, "The anti-virus market is undergoing a rapid evolution beyond traditional desktop virus scanning technology. As a result, vendors are differentiating their products by taking three approaches: 1) providing better manageability, 2) providing targeted 'virus airlocks' for specific environments, and 3) bundling security suites with additional functionality. McAfee's Total Virus Defense initiative puts them on the short list for all three approaches."

New technology within NetShield Security Suite includes:

WebShield - Virus Protection For Internet Gateways. WebShield virus scans all inbound and outbound Internet e-mail, file transfers and web-browsing traffic from a dedicated Intel system.

GroupShield - Anti-Virus For Notes and Exchange Servers. GroupShield delivers native Exchange and Notes applications that scan and clean messages in real time within mail stores, private folders and public folders.

WebWall - Full-Featured Firewall. NSS includes a full-featured, highly secure firewall that protects against outside hackers or segments an Intranet to protect critical departmental data.

NetShield - Based on the 100-percent detection Hunter Engine, NetShield software provides anti-virus server protection for Netware, NT and Dec Alpha for NT.

NetCrypto - Secures application-to-application communications by automatically and transparently encrypting all TCP/IP traffic between protected NT and Unix servers.

VirusScan Unix - Performs on-demand scans for PC files stored on Unix servers.

NSS incorporates the McAfee Enterprise (ME) Console, which gives LAN Administrators advanced manageability with completely automated software-distribution capabilities. A unique manageability feature of the ME console includes the ability to distribute software updates to NT workstations without requiring recipients to have NT administrator rights. In addition, the McAfee Console supports both 16- and 32-bit desktop environments, Netware and NT network operating systems, and offers centralized alerting and reporting for detailed virus management. The McAfee Enterprise console comes ready to deploy software upgrades, and is also fully customizable to meet the unique requirements of each installation.

NSS will be available September 9th.
