One Billion Pounds of Paper Recycled by Kmart Corporation and Weyerhaeuser Company
Business Wire, August 28, 1997
FEDERAL WAY, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 1997--Kmart Corporation and Weyerhaeuser Company have surpassed a recycling milestone of 500,000 tons - or one billion pounds - of used corrugated boxes.
After retail goods are received in-store, the boxes are recycled by Kmart employees and collected by Weyerhaeuser. Weyerhaeuser Company uses the material to make new corrugated boxes, some of which are used to ship new product back to Kmart.
The amount of paper recycled thus far would:
-- Make a new three-foot-wide section of paper long enough to wrap
around the earth 12 times.
-- Fill two average-sized sports stadiums.
-- Fill a train stretched from Troy, Michigan to London, Ontario.
In an agreement signed Dec. 14, 1993, Kmart and Weyerhaeuser joined forces to minimize waste and increase recovered fiber through a national bale collection and transportation system.
Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY) is one of the largest recyclers of office wastepaper, newspaper and corrugated boxes in North America. The company is also the world's largest private owner of merchantable softwood timber and producer of softwood lumber and market pulp. Its principal segments are timberlands and wood products; pulp, paper and packaging; and real estate.
Kmart Corporation serves America with 2,122 Kmart, Big Kmart and Super Kmart retail outlets. In addition to serving all 50 states, Kmart operations extend to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. More information about Kmart can be found on the World Wide Web at www.kmart.com .
