Data General Announces Agreement with APT for Mainframe to Client/Server Migration System
Business Wire, Dec 15, 1997
WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1997--Data General has signed an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) agreement with APT of America Inc., an international software house that specializes in the automated migration of legacy systems to client/server environments.
Under terms of the agreement, APT's G7-Migration System will be available with Data General's AViiON server platform. Data General also will provide a complete range of migration services to simplify the move from legacy to open systems.
A Migration Center of Competency has been set up by the companies at APT's Naples, Florida headquarters to conduct feasibility studies and demonstrations for clients.
APT's G7-Migration System lets businesses migrate legacy applications and data to both UNIX and Windows NT client/server operating environments. It supports all major relational databases including ORACLE, SYBASE, INFORMIX and Microsoft SQL Server.
"When compared to performing the migration manually, G7-Migration can cut time requirements by up to 75 percent, and migration costs by up to percent," said Gerhard Watzinger, president of APT. "Another major advantage of G7-Migration is that the user is free to change between UNIX and Windows NT operating systems, as well as switch database vendors without penalty at any time after the migration."
By moving operations from mainframe computers to client/server systems, companies are better able to apply new technologies such as relational databases and graphical user interfaces to allow users better access to information. In addition, an open systems environment provides companies the flexibility to incorporate key technologies such as imaging and electronic commerce into their current IT models. "In today's competitive global market this ability to adapt is a requirement -- not an option," added Mr. Watzinger.
"This strategic alliance between Data General and APT of America further strengthens Data General's position as a premiere solution provider for organizations that want to make a smooth migration from mainframe to client/server environments," said Daniel Sapir, vice president of Enterprise Solutions for Data General.
Data General's Intel based AViiON server family ranges from the entry-level, single- or dual-processor AV 2150; to the eight- processor AV 8600 enterprise NT server; to the powerful NUMA technology based AV 20000, which has 32 200-MHz Intel Pentium Pro processors.
APT of America is based in Naples, Florida. The company's G7 Migration System has been successfully applied in converting proprietary systems such as IBM, Tandem and Bull to client/server platforms using UNIX or Microsoft Windows NT Server.
Data General (NYSE:DGN), based in Westboro, Massachusetts specializes in servers, storage systems and related software and services for customers worldwide. The company reported revenues of $1.5 billion during fiscal 1997. Additional information on the company, its products and services is available on the Internet at http://www.dg.com . -0-
