LEK Technologies Announces 200MHz MMX Notebook; Advanced Engineering Keeps System Cool, While Intel MMX Technology and Modular Design Sets Standards For Ugradeability andd Performance
Business Wire, Feb 10, 1997
AMARILLO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1997--LEK Technologies, Inc., a custom manufacturer and distributor of computer systems, broke the notebook speed barrier when itt today announced the LEK FutureNote MX 200, a 200MHz notebook PC based on Intel's new Pentium Processors with MMX Technology.
LEK's modular design and Intel's MMX chips combine to make the FutureNote MX 200 the most powerful multimedia notebook PC available -- and a system that can be easily upgraded with its plug-in Intel 200MHz MMX CPU, detachable display, and standard DIMMs. TThe FutureNote MX 200 will be sold by LEK to resellers, endusers, small business and Fortune 1000 companies.
Base price for a FutureNote MX 200 is $3,550 ($3,050 with 10.4-inch Active Matrix display). It will include a 200MHz Intel MMX CPU, 16MB RAM, 1GB hard drive, 8X internal CD-ROM with 16-bit 3D stereo sound, 33.6 Kbps PC Card modem, 1.44MB floppy drive, 12.1-inch TFT LCD display, NiMH battery, carrying case, and Windows 95. A fully-loaded FutureNote MX 200 model with 40 MB RAM and 2.1GB hard drive will have a list price of $3,950.
LEK Technologies has designed a highly modular notebook PC that can be easily configured to enduser's specs. LEK allows the end-user to select/upgrade the CPU, memory, hard drive, battery, and display of their choice as well as interchange peripherals such as the CD-ROM drive, batteries and floppy drives.
The FutureNote MX 200 is built with industry-standard DIMM sockets rather than proprietary memory modules to make upgrading easy and less costly than many competing notebooks. The FutureNote MX 200 offers two DIMM sockets to make current RAM expandable to 40MBs. The Intel MMX-enabled microprocessor is also a plug-in module rather than a soldered-in component, which makes all models upgradeable to any speed Intel CPU. The 12.1-inch, 800 x 600 Super VGA LCD (liquid crystal display) is removable and can also be upgraded.
Advanced Engineering Cools Pentium Processor
LEK Technologies leaped over a huge engineering hurdle by integrating a combination heat sink/fan which vents heat out the side of the case to cool the CPU. Users could conceivably run the system for weeks without overheating it.
The Advantage of MMX Technology
The FutureNote MX 200 with its MMX CPU outperforms non-MMX systems as much as 30 percent, according to LEK. Intel's MMX Technology delivers a set of 57 new instructions to the CPU to enhance multimedia, graphics, video, audio, 3-D environments and communications. They include doubling the available cache to 32KB; faster compression and storage for digital imaging; faster image manipulation; faster printing; and higher frame rates of 20-30 frames per second versus 15- 25 for video conferencing and presentations. When used with MMX-enabled software applications performance can improve even more than 30 percent, according to LEK.
Other standard features on the LEK FutureNote MX 200 include 256KB synchronous Level 2 cache; 2MB PCI bus video card with external monitor port for 1280 x 1024 resolution; MPEG-1 video decoding; built-in Type III or two Type II PC Card (PCMCIA); 16-bit 3-D stereo sound with built-in speakers; 88-key keyboard with touchpad pointing device, and optional docking station and port replicator.
The modular peripheral bay offers a number of configuration options. For example, the internal CD-ROM can be exchanged with either a second NiMH battery supply, or a 1.4 Floppy Drive. The floppy drive or the CD-ROM can also be connected to the external FDD I/O port for simultaneous use.
The FutureNote MX 200 measures in inches: 2 1/8 Height, 11.5 Width, 9 1/4 Depth, and weighs just 6.3 pounds with battery.
