Phoenix Technologies' PICO Group Launches Comprehensive Software Foundations for Microsoft Windows CE; Leader in Information Appliance Software Foundations Teams With Microsoft and Silicon Vendors to Enable New Platforms Based on Microsoft Windows CE Operating System

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1997--Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: PTEC) -- the leading supplier of system level software to manufacturers of PCs, and its PICO Group, a leading supplier of software foundations for information appliance systems, today announced a comprehensive set of software foundations and development tools that will enable OEMs to develop a wide range of differentiated Windows CE systems for the Hand Held, Consumer, and Industrial Appliance markets.
One of the key software foundation products is Phoenix PicoPAL/CE, a software abstraction layer that works in concert with Windows CE, providing a consistent interface for the operating system, regardless of hardware, as well as provide advanced micro-control of the platform power consumption, significantly extending the battery life of Windows CE systems.
In addition, PICO is providing Phoenix PicoStor/CE, which enables Windows CE systems to use linear FLASH storage, such as fixed FLASH arrays, FLASH PC Cards and Miniature Cards. That product was demonstrated on a Windows CE Hand Held PC at Fall COMDEX.
PICO is also providing OEMs with Phoenix PicoRay/CE, a high performance IrDA 1.1 compatible stack and services that dramatically improves the speed and interoperability of infrared communications between Windows CE systems and PCs, digital cameras, smart phones, and other information appliances.
For Windows CE platform development, PICO is announcing the availability of Phoenix PicoScope, a comprehensive development toolset that runs in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and communicates with the target Windows CE system through a patented debug engine embedded in PicoPAL/CE.

PICO is also actively working with leading OEMs in the enhancement of existing Windows CE functions such as PC Card capabilities, Keyboard, and Video subsystem components, adapting the leading edge technology of Phoenix software to OEM platforms.
