Unisys TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server provides Sun Solaris
users with support for X.500, LDAP and X.509 public key
certificate storage
Unisys Corp. Monday announced the immediate availability of the TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server on the Sun Solaris operating system, one of the most popular platforms for Internet and Intranet applications.
TransIT 500 is a highly scaleable, high-performance directory server that includes full support for the popular Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP, RFC 1777), a proposed open standard for directory services on the Internet.
Companies deploying advanced Internet and Intranet applications using both UNIX and Windows NT servers can use TransIT 500 to organize and publish vital corporate information in a searchable, structured and scaleable directory.
Unisys also announced that TransIT 500, through its support for X.509 certificates, has been validated as fully interoperable with Nortel's Entrust certificate authority for full-featured user authentication.
"Our customers and resellers have taken a keen interest in the use of TransIT 500 on the Internet, with broadened support for LDAP, new platforms such as Sun Solaris and standards-based certificate authorization," said Barry Keyes, marketing director, Unisys Computer Systems Group (CSG).
Strong demand for directory services on Solaris
Unisys markets the TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server both directly to end users and through independent software vendors (ISVs) such as Soft-Switch Products Division of Lotus Development Corp. and Infonet Software Solutions Inc.
"We have seen a rapidly increasing demand for directory-based applications as part of a total Internet/Intranet productivity solution," noted Alex Rassey, president of Infonet Software Solutions Inc., an ISV reseller of Unisys TransIT 500.
"Since about eighty percent of our customers are using Sun Solaris, TransIT's added support for this platform complements Infonet's existing productivity solutions and our ability to respond to our customers' needs."
Support for LDAP is an important feature for Soft-Switch Products Division of Lotus Development Corp., which recently strengthened its commitment to TransIT 500 by bundling it as a component of the Soft-Switch Directory Publisher.
"The speedy implementation of the latest LDAP protocol positions Unisys as the premier OEM supplier of Internet/Intranet directory service software," commented Martin D. Reber, product line director at Soft-Switch. "This leadership and innovation has lead Lotus to partner with Unisys for the X.500 component of Directory Publisher."
Available now for today's Internet-based enterprises
The TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server includes many features required by today's enterprises, such as security services that make it possible to protect the information in any part of the directory or that safeguard applications like electronic commerce and electronic messaging through the storage of X.509 certificates.
Even more important is the validation of TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server with the entire Defense Messaging System (DMS) schema and validation of the product with the Nortel Entrust certificate authority.
The Nortel Entrust family of public-key cryptography products provides encryption, digital signature and automated key management for tens of thousands of users and beyond.
The TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server can be used for URL repositories, DNS name storage, white pages services, catalogs, e-mail address books, network security and other applications. TransIT 500 software was honored with the Best of Show product award at the 1995 Electronic Messaging Association (EMA) annual conference.
Pricing and Availability
The TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server is available today for Microsoft Windows NT, Hewlett-Packard HP/UX, Unisys UNIX System V.4 and now, Sun Solaris 2.5.
The TransIT 500 Directory Server is fully integrated with popular database systems, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and Informix, bringing the power of these systems to directory applications. Pricing for the TransIT 500 Internet Directory Server is highly competitive -- for the combined suite of services it offers -- at $3500. Volume discounts are available for ISVs.
