Legato, Digital, Oracle, and StorageTek Publish Results of Very Large Database Backup and Restore Benchmarks; Benchmark Whitepaper Available Upon Request
Business Wire, Jan 17, 1997
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 17, 1997--Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a leader in the enterprise storage management software market, today announced the results of a recent database backup and restore demonstration for very large database (VLDB) environments based on the company's recently announced BusinesSuite(TM) and Power Edition(TM) product lines.
As business-critical database applications grow to hundreds of gigabytes and beyond, high performance backup and restore operation has now become an essential requirement for VLDB implementation.
"While previous benchmarks have focused on backup rates, the true test of a storage management application is how fast it can restore," said Louis C. Cole, president and CEO of Legato Systems, Inc. "NetWorker's restore speed of 136 GB/per hour was two and a half times faster than previously published benchmarks. When an application is down, and the database administrator is under tremendous pressure, the only thing that matters is how fast the data can be restored."
Working together, Legato and DIGITAL have demonstrated a "hot" Oracle backup of 420 gigabytes per hour while attaining a restore rate of 136 gigabytes per hour. Conducted jointly by Legato and Digital Equipment Corporation at DIGITAL's Palo Alto facility, the tests measured the maximum transfer rate achieved in backing up and restoring an Oracle database using Oracle's EBU (Enterprise Backup Utility) and DIGITAL's NetWorker (jointly developed by Legato and DIGITAL) running on a DIGITAL AlphaServer 8400 with eight 300 MHz Alpha CPUs, 8gb of memory, 440GB StorageWorks Disk Subsystem, and 15 StorageTek Redwood tape subsystems.
"These benchmark results position DIGITAL and Legato as the leaders in high-performance backup and restore solutions for customers with very large database (VLDB) and data warehousing applications. AlphaServer 8400 and Oracle customers running DIGITAL UNIX now have a clear choice in high-performance backup and restore solutions to protect their businesses," said Dave Coombs, DIGITAL's vice president of Worldwide Storage Marketing.
"In the drive towards maintaining a competitive edge, many companies have implemented VLDB operations and data warehousing strategies. Their data is their business," said Dan Oister, channel development manager for Storage Technology Corp. "Legato provides a cornerstone for protecting this data with the BusinesSuite and Power Edition product set. These products provide competitive companies with tools to meet the difficult challenge of business resumption planning through high performance software coupled with serious processors and peripherals."
Continuing Legato's commitment of providing the fastest, most reliable database backup and restore solution on the market, the company recently launched BusinesSuite, a dedicated set of NetWorker options that provide on-line data protection of databases and other enterprise-critical applications that must be available to users on a 24-hour basis. NetWorker, in concert with BusinesSuite, is the only comprehensive storage management solution that addresses the need for cross-platform support of enterprise applications running on Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Windows NT, and Legato OEM platforms, including DIGITAL UNIX and Alpha NT. BusinesSuite offers support for Oracle, Informix, SAP, Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange applications.
Power Edition is a specialized adaptation of Legato's NetWorker technology that dramatically improves backup/restore performance on a local data server, relative to the standard NetWorker product, which is optimized for network-wide performance involving potentially hundreds of clients across multiple types of platforms. With Power Edition, Legato combines its enterprise-strength NetWorker technology and storage management expertise to deliver high performance solutions that can be optimized for each hardware platform and customer application.
