Deutsche Telekom Announces Powerful New Operational Data Store to Improve Customer Service; Tandem 6.5 Terabyte Operational Data Store Enables 40 Million German Telephone Customers to Access Their Records in Less Than Two Seconds
Business Wire, Jan 20, 1997
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 1997--Deutsche Telekom is nearing production for a huge, 6.5 terabyte Tandem(R) Computers-based operational data store, which will enable its 16,000 customer service representatives to respond within two seconds to any customer who calls in to request current or past invoice records.
Company executives anticipate a dramatic improvement in customer satisfaction as a result of implementation of the operational data store. Deutsche Telekom, Germany's largest telecommunications company, based in Bonn, has more than 40 million customers in Germany.
This announcement was made in the United States by Tandem Computers Incorporated, which is providing Deutsche Telekom with its advanced, massively parallel K20000 NonStop(R) Himalaya(R) servers and its parallelized NonStop SQL database. The four K20000 servers, with 6.5 terabytes of disk, and 13 terabytes of mirrored storage, are distributed in three regional centers and linked via Deutsche Telekoms internal ILAN/WAN network, enabling access from anywhere in Germany.
Database Updated Nightly
Each night, accumulated invoice data from the telephone billing system is transferred to the database. Because of their massively parallel architecture, the Himalaya servers can complete the transfer and loading of 53 gigabytes of data in less than six hours. Each morning, the 16,000 customer service representatives can access the updated database from their PCs, and provide highly responsive customer service.
