Litton awarded major air-traffic- control communications contract by FAA

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 23, 1997--The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded Litton's Amecom Division a contract to provide 50 of the latest Amecom Model 3080E digital voice switching systems for air-traffic-control towers and terminal radar approach-control facilities throughout the United States.

The initial contract award is for more than $12 million for 50 systems to be delivered over a two-year period.

This award is the third multiple order placed by the FAA since 1993 under the Rapid Deployment Voice Switch (RDVS) program, and will continue the current production and deployment of Litton Amecom's advanced-technology digital voice equipment to the FAA for air-traffic-control communications.

Litton's highly successful voice switch is called the Model 3080E Integrated Communications Switching System (ICSS). Systems recently installed under the RDVS program are controlling air- traffic operations in 25 of the nation's busiest airport towers and traffic-control facilities.

The largest Model 3080E systems delivered to date became operational last year at Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago O'Hare International Airports.

Litton's RDVS systems provide reliable air-traffic-control voice communications through innovative advanced technology, with systems developed specifically to meet the stringent performance requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The nonblocking redundant systems use high-speed digital voice and data switching techniques to provide digital and analog voice connections between air-traffic controllers within airports and control facilities, between distant FAA facilities and to aircraft flight crews in air-traffic-controlled airspace.
