HP Announces NetWare 4.1 Services for HP 9000 Enterprise Servers and Workstations; First RISC UNIX Systems Vendor to Deliver Novell Directory Service Ported to its Industry-leading HP-UX Operating System
Business Wire, Jan 27, 1997
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1997-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that it is the first enterprise RISC UNIX(R) system vendor to port NetWare 4.1 with Novell Directory Service (NDS) to its industry-leading HP-UX(1) operating system. NetWare 4.1 Service with NDS for HP 9000 systems, the latest product within HP's IT Collaboration Program, exemplifies HP's efforts toward integrating mixed environments. Recognizing how challenging it has become for customers to integrate enterprise and workgroup environments effectively, HP's IT Collaboration Program focuses on facilitating the coexistence of mixed UNIX system, Novell NetWare and Microsoft(R) Windows(R) NT environments.

Through the integration of Novell's networking software and HP's HP-UX operating environment, NetWare 4.1 Services for HP 9000 systems enables multiplatform customers to engage in network monitoring, high-performance, file- and print-sharing and management activities while providing security-enhanced access to vital HP-UX applications.
"Successful integration of mixed operating environments continues to be a key customer requirement that HP addresses specifically with NetWare 4.1 Services for HP 9000 systems and, in a broader sense, with its IT Collaboration Program," said David Scott, software products marketing manager for HP's Enterprise Systems Division. "With NetWare 4.1 Services for HP 9000 systems, customers need not make a choice between the convenience of desktop environments and the scaleability, manageability and application support available on HP-UX platforms. With NetWare 4.1 Services for HP 9000 systems, the two environments can coexist."
"HP has shared Novell's goal of providing its customers with timely, integrated network solutions for some time," said Tom Arthur, vice president and general manager of Novell's Internet Infrastructure Division. "With this product, customers can expect to benefit from the layering of powerful NDS security on top of their UNIX system files and printers and from the ability to manage and access multiple platforms through a simple graphical user interface (GUI)."
NetWare 4.1 Services for HP 9000 systems is a set of networking services that provide a LAN-based distributed processing environment for PC and HP-UX users. NetWare 4.1, the most recent addition to HP's product line for HP 9000 enterprise servers and workstations using NetWare, features a variety of services that collaborate to provide network administrators with single-point control of the entire network and its resources. Regardless of physical location and desktop operating system, the NetWare 4.1 network operating system establishes the distributed network as a single, enterprisewide information system.
Through the incorporation of Novell's NDS, NetWare 4.1 Services for HP 9000 systems provides an operating environment that permits the development of client/server applications using the strengths of the NetWare networking infrastructure and the UNIX system application-development and execution environment. Ported directly to the UNIX operating system, Novell's NDS is a globally distributed database that provides a logical view of network services and resources. With a single easy-to-use GUI network interface, users log in and enter a password only once to gain access to all the network resources they are authorized to use, without ever having to deal with the underlying network.
"NetWare 4.1 with NDS will allow us to maximize Novell's directory-services implementation while continuing to operate on our HP-UX system," said Kirk Evensen, systems manager for Hughes Aircraft. "The ability to source Novell services from an HP-UX server will greatly enhance our ability to provide transparent data access for our multiplatform engineering computers."
