Lucent Technologies Places Order for Cycomm International's Cellular Security Device that Prevents Unauthorized Eavesdropping
Business Wire, Jan 28, 1997
MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 1997--Cycomm International Inc. (AMEX:CYI) announced Tuesday that Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU) has placed an initial order for units for resale of Cycomm's Slice Cellular Security Devices, digital voice-encryption attachments for the Motorola MicroTAC series of handheld cellular telephones.
The device gives users one-button digital encryption capability preventing eavesdroppers from monitoring sensitive business or personal conversation. This is the largest single order to date received by Cycomm for its cellular security products. The exact number of units is confidential in accordance with an agreement between Cycomm and Lucent.

Developed by Cycomm Corp. and Bell Laboratories, the Slice Cellular Security Devices -- the CSD-550 and CSD-555 -- incorporate Lucent Technologies Surity(TM) voice-encryption technology. The devices slip easily between the battery and handset of Motorola MicroTAC cellular phones.
No modification of the cellular phone is required. Anyone attempting to monitor secure conversations between cellular phones equipped with Slice CSDs will hear only digital white noise.
Users of cellular phones equipped with the new CSDs will also gain the ability to conduct secure conversations with users of home and office telephones equipped with Lucent Technologies' Surity Telephone Device 3600. More than 10,000 Surity 3600 units are in service with a variety of U.S. government agencies and commercial companies.
Lucent Technologies, formed as a result of AT&T's restructuring, is a leading provider of digital voice encryption systems and technology to U.S. government agencies, U.S. corporations and selected international governments.
Albert I. Hawk, president and chief executive officer of Cycomm, stated that, "We are excited to receive this initial order from Lucent for Cycomm's CSD Slice. The customer response of the product has been very encouraging and we are looking forward to rolling out the CSD Slice into the marketplace with our well respected partner, Lucent Technologies."
Hawk further noted, "that the availability of the CSD Slice is timely in light of the well publicized ease of interception of the cellular conversation with House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Mr. Gingrich's conversation could have been encrypted if the CSD Slice were used, thus avoiding interception and the subsequent embarrassment of the revelation of sensitive information."
Cycomm International Inc., headquartered in McLean with subsidiaries in Sebastian, Fla., Montreal, Portland, Ore., and Albuquerque, N.M., develops, manufactures and markets value added secure telecommunications and computer products.
