SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 1997--

DataTAC(R) System from Motorola Considered De Facto Standard for

Wireless Packet Data Networks In Asia

Today, Motorola Wireless Data Group announced an agreement with P. T. Elektrindo Nusantara, Indonesia's first wireless data network operator, to provide a country-wide DataTAC(R) 5000 system for two-way mobile data communications. This agreement follows a decision made by Indonesia's Department of Tourism, Posts and Telecommunications to grant P. T. Elektrindo Nusantara a license to operate a nationwide packet data wireless communication system.

The DataTAC system wirelessly enables electronic fund transfers and point-of-sale transactions such as on-line authorization of debit and credit cards. The system also enables e-mail access, messaging, database access, automated dispatch, and mobile field maintenance for sales and technical support services without the need to connect to a telephone line. Handheld and laptop computers and data terminals can communicate remotely with corporate networks and mobile users over the DataTAC network by using a Personal Messenger(TM) Wireless Modem Card, a Series 500 Integrated Wireless Modem or an MRM 660 Mobile Radio Modem, all from Motorola.

The DataTAC network will operate at a speed of 19.2 kbps and is scheduled to commence operation in Indonesia during the first quarter of 1997, beginning with deployment of 40 base stations throughout Jabotabek. The system will expand to Bali, Batam, Medan, Semarang, Surabaya, West Jawa, Yogyakarta and other regions within Indonesia.

"P. T. Elektrindo's decision to build a DataTAC system further demonstrates that the DataTAC technology is becoming the de facto standard for wireless data communications in Asia and around the world," said Gary Kalanj, director and general manager, Motorola Wireless Data Systems Division. "P.T. Elektrindo's network is a key addition to wireless data communications in Asia Pacific," Kalanj stated.

Indonesia joins a growing list of Asian countries which have built or are in the process of building DataTAC networks, including Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The widespread adoption of DataTAC systems throughout Asia offers the potential for future interconnectivity and roaming agreements in the region, providing customers with seamless communication throughout Asia. Currently, Motorola AirCommunications, Ltd. (Hong Kong) and Singapore Telecom PageLink networks offer interconnection between their networks. Other countries that have adopted DataTAC systems include Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the United States.

"The DataTAC technology from Motorola was selected because of its reliability and speed, in addition to its widespread acceptance and compatibility with networks throughout Asia and other countries around the world," said Harry Kuntoro, president director of Elektrindo. "Motorola's technical expertise and experience in wireless communications will help accelerate the use of wireless data technology in Indonesia," Kuntoro added.

P. T. Elektrindo Nusantara, founded in 1983 and based in Jakarta, is a subsidiary of the Bimantara Group. The company has made major contributions to the development of the country's telecommunications networks through satellite communications systems, digital telephone exchanges, microwave and optical fiber backbones, and mobile telephone services.
