Hitachi PC Integrates Intel MMX Technology; Mx-Series Notebook to Integrate 166MHz Pentium Processor with MMX Technology; Paves Way for Faster, Better Mobile Multimedia
Business Wire, Jan 8, 1997
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 8, 1996--Hitachi PC Corp. today announced their support and integration of the Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology for Hitachi's flagship notebook line, the Mx-Series. The Mx-Series notebooks will offer a 166MHz Pentium processor with the MMX technology enhancement, which provides accelerated video, graphics, and overall advanced multimedia processing.
"As part of our `best-of-breed' philosophy, integrating MMX technology is a strategic and technical advantage that advances Hitachi notebooks beyond other tier one notebook manufacturers," said Mark Yahiro, vice president of marketing and business development for Hitachi PC. "Having a leadership position with MMX technology means our customers will receive cutting edge technology well before the rest of the pack."
According to Intel, MMX technology provides a performance increase of up to 20 percent for non-MMX technology software applications, and a performance increase of up to 60 percent when used with multimedia applications written for Pentium processors with MMX technology. Hitachi notebooks with MMX technology will allow users to take full advantage of this increase in power and multimedia capabilities in a mobile environment.
With the integration of MMX technology, users will see tremendous growth in applications that utilize more video; such as in games, graphic packages, presentations or related multimedia applications. In addition, the MMX technology will compensate for one of the greatest challenges in video conferencing -- how to increase the video window size without degrading the video resolution or frame rate.
The Mx-Series notebooks are engineered to compensate for additional heat generated by MMX technology by use of hybrid thermal solutions at the processor level as well as mechanical design changes.
The Mx-Series is a product line extension from Hitachi's first multimedia notebook, the M-Series, which premiered in May, 1996. The new Mx-Series expands on many of the award winning features seen on the original M-Series, such as integrating both LAN and 33.6 Kbps cellular capable modem ports, swappable CD-ROM and disc drives plus crisp audio and video output.
Currently, the Mx-Series is powered by either a 133 or 150-MHz Pentium processor. A 166MHz version with MMX technology will be available within 30 days. Pricing to be announced at ship time.
