HP Offers Industry's Highest-intensity LED Lamps for Outdoor Applications; Second-generation AlInGaP — AlInGaP II — Lamps Provide Brightest Lighting Solution
Business Wire, July 1, 1997
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 1, 1997-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced a line of 5-mm (T1-3/4) aluminum-indium-gallium-phosphide (AlInGaP) light-emitting diodes featuring the highest intensities of any LED lamps currently in production. These second-generation precision optical performance LED lamps offer reliable, weather-resistant and bright sources for use in traffic-management designs, such as traffic signals and variable-message signs and in commercial outdoor advertising, such as moving-message signs and marquees.
"LEDs are a superior light source for sign and signal applications compared to incandescent bulbs and other technologies due to their longevity, viewability and energy savings," said Milt Liebhaber, general manager of the Optoelectronics Division of HP's Components Group. "This new family widens the gap between LEDs and other light sources and will accelerate an already brisk adoption rate for LED solutions."
HP's precision optical performance AlinGaP II LEDs feature special lens structures that enable precise control of light output. This control ensures that letters and symbols in message panels appear consistently sharp and bright over the specified viewing angle. These lamps offer the same stability as HP's guaranteed-performance LEDs for traffic-signal applications due to their use of the same advanced optical-grade epoxy that greatly improves the lamps' operability in high and low temperatures and under conditions of moisture. The package's epoxy also contains ultraviolet-a and ultraviolet-b inhibitors to reduce the effects of long-term exposure to direct sunlight.
HP precision optical performance lamps are available in three viewing angles, making them optimal in applications in traffic signals and road signs. They are available in three colors: amber (592 nm wavelength), reddish-orange (617 nm) and red (630 nm). These LED lamps come in clear, nondiffused, T1-3/4 packages incorporating second-generation optics that produce well-defined spatial-radiation patterns. Each version is available with standoff tabs on the leadframes to make automated assembly easier.
U.S. PRICES AND AVAILABILITY
Pricing is about 36 cents each in quantities of 1 million. Sample quantities of most colors and configurations are available from stock.
