Emulex Announces Industry's First Sun Solaris PCI Bus Fibre Channel Host Adapter for Sun's New Ultra 30 PCI I/O-Based Workstation

Business Wire, July 15, 1997

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1997--Emulex Corp. (NASDAQ:EMLX), a leader in fibre channel technology and products, announced Tuesday that it will provide gigabit connectivity for Sun's new Ultra 30 PCI I/O-based workstation with the addition of a Solaris device driver for the industry leading Emulex LightPulse(TM) PCI bus fibre channel host adapters.

The LP6000 Solaris device driver, which has been validated by Sun Microsystems Inc., allows Sun Ultra 30 customers to access fibre channel devices from their Solaris-based workstations. The driver implements SCSI and IP protocols allowing concurrent support for both storage and networking applications. Emulex LightPulse adapters operate at full line speed (1Gbps), support all fibre channel topologies (switched fabric, arbitrated loop, and point to point), and include all current classes of service. Fibre channel, with its gigabit data rates, simplified cabling, and expanded support for large numbers of attached devices, provides the best performance and highest reliability solution for multiple users who require immediate access to large data files.

"Emulex is pleased to work with Sun to bring the advantages of fibre channel technology to customers of Sun's new generation of PCI I/O-based workstations," said Mike Kane, senior product marketing manager for Emulex.

"Emulex has experience providing robust, high-performance I/O for Sun platforms and we are proud to continue this tradition with our fibre channel solutions for the Ultra 30. With the enhancements to speed, performance, and data access capabilities, fibre channel technology will be particularly significant for Internet and intranet servers and CAD/CAE applications where Sun has industry recognition as a provider of high availability, high-performance solutions."

The LP6000 fibre channel PCI bus host adapter, in production since Q2 1996, and the new Solaris driver are available for immediate delivery. Contact Emulex at 714/662-5600 or 800/854-7112 for more information.

About Sun's New PCI I/O-based Ultra 30 Workstations

Sun Microsystems, the industry leader in the power desktop market, has just unveiled its new flagship Ultra 30 line of single- processor workstations. The Ultra 30 Model 250 and Ultra 30 Model 300 feature new levels of CPU and graphics performance; up to 2MB external processor caches; enhanced UPA memory performance; and 40MB/second Ultra SCSI disks. These systems are the first Sun workstations to feature Sun's new multiple-channel 33 and 66MHz PCI I/O buses and are designed for customers for whom faster performance means better engineering, quicker turnaround of "what if" scenarios, and faster time-to-market, which in turn lead to a faster ROI for customers.
