Superscape Virtual Reality Delivers Off-the-Shelf Interior Design; VR-Based Interior Design Package Developed in Superscape VRT5; Innovative New 3D Product for the Worldwide Consumer Marketplace

Business Wire, July 18, 1997

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 18, 1997--Launched on 19 July 1997 is the 3D Interior Design2 package from Europress, a leading publisher of entertainment, educational, life study and home computing CD titles.

Interior Design 2, developed using Superscape's VRT5 3D authoring software and with a recommended retail price of $50.00, is the first virtual reality-based interior design product for the home market. The product will, initially, be marketed and sold throughout Europe, but will shortly be available in the U.S. via selected outlets.

John Chiplin, CEO of Superscape said: "The 3D Interior Design product provides an excellent example of how much added value can be made available to the home user with the use of real-time 3D. From Superscape's point of view, sales of the product will provide on-going royalty revenues as well as increasing awareness of the power and capabilities of our software in the consumer marketplace."

Don Lewis, Communications director at Europress, said: "Realism is the watchword with this new design package, from the sound of percolating coffee in the kitchen, to music on the stereo and pictures on the television. Interior design really comes alive with 3D Interior Design2."

Designed to be both powerful and yet easy to use, 3D Interior Design has been developed following extensive international market research to define the needs of the home interior designer. The product is supplied as a PC CD-Rom with a portfolio of completed visuals to illustrate the many variations and styles which can be achieved.

Once the room dimensions have been input, more than six hundred furnishings, fittings and textured objects are available from the Virtual Clip Art library. These can be dragged and dropped into the room space and include tiled floors, window boxes and indoor swimming pools. Colors, textures and lighting can all be changed with a simple point and click action, to try out various "what if" scenarios.

To add to the realism, many of the objects have "intelligent characteristics": the curtains can be pulled back and channels can be changed on the television.

The product is divided into three main sections: -0- -- Planner is a 2D environment where the user defines the basic shape of the room, positions walls, windows and doors with the aid of a grid.

-- Editor is the main part of the program. It is a 3D environment into which users import their 2D plan, and develop it into a fully detailed room. Designs are edited and built in real-time with tools, accessible via a tool bar.

-- Visualizer enables the user to explore and experience the design. Camera mode, for example, records movements and plays them back as an animation, while human mode allows the user to set their height and then walk around the room. -0-

The product also has a facility which calculates wall and floor area to help with budgeting and buying wallpaper and carpets.

Note: For the U.S. marketplace, Interior Design 2 is available directly from Europress in the UK -- telephone Barry Taylor on 1625 859333.
