HP, Adobe Introduce One-Step Scan-to-Web Solution; HP, Adobe, and Microsoft Products Work Together to Provide Simple, Seamless Intranet-publishing Solution

Business Wire, June 10, 1997

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 1997-- Hewlett-Packard Company and Adobe Systems, Incorporated today announced the industry's first one-step scan-to-Web system. The system consists of an HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner, Adobe(TM) Acrobat Capture 2.0 software and Microsoft(R) Index Server 1.1 and provides an easy way to deliver scanned documents directly to commercial intranets and the Internet. HP will demonstrate this solution in its booth (No. 3910) at PC Expo in New York June 17 through 19.

The Network ScanJet 5 scanner serves as an on-ramp to an intranet or the Internet by making it easy for workgroups to convert paper information into electronic form. Adobe Acrobat Capture 2.0 then converts the electronic documents into the Portable Document Format (PDF), a searchable, Web-ready file format that preserves the formatting of the original document.

Microsoft Index Server 1.1, a search engine integrated with Microsoft Internet Information Server 3.0, continually monitors file-server locations for documents waiting to be distributed. Documents are indexed and assigned a Universal Resource Locator (URL), then posted to designated Web pages. With Adobe's new IFilter for PDF, Microsoft Index Server can index and search PDF documents and complete the one-step, one-button, scan-to-Web solution. Microsoft Internet Information Server is the Web server component of Microsoft Windows NT(R) Server 4.0.

"For the first time, everyday office workers can scan paper documents and send them directly to a designated corporate intranet site with the touch of a button," said Cathy Lyons, general manager of the HP Bergamo Hardcopy Division. "This scan-to-Web solution can help businesses manage and distribute paper-based information via the Web."

"Our firm is intensely interested in providing our legal and service-bureau clients with cost-effective paper-to-Web solutions," said Robert Berghell, president of Berghell Associates, a value-added reseller in Los Angeles. "This scan-to-Web solution has increased our clients' efficiency tremendously, and was implemented with very attractive service and labor costs."

"By converting paper documents into small, searchable files that can be distributed easily on corporate intranets and the Web, Acrobat Capture helps customers manage information from paper sources as easily and cost-effectively as content from electronic sources," said John Kunze, vice president and general manager, Adobe Systems. "The integration between HP, Adobe and Microsoft helps customers use the Web to save the time and costs associated with finding and distributing critical business documents, even those that originate on paper."

"The combination of the HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner, with the special document indexing capabilities of Microsoft Index Server, will help bridge the gap between the paper and digital world," said Jonathan Perera, lead product manager, Internet Information Server at Microsoft.
