HOPKINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 1997--

Implements The New EMC TimeFinder Software for Year

2000 Testing and Point-in-Time Backups

EMC Corporation announced today that Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation, the leading provider of private mortgage insurance in the United States, has selected EMC's Symmetrix 5700 Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) system and EMC information sharing, business continuance, and information management software as part of a major enterprise-wide consolidation of critical business information.

Mike Meade, MGIC's Senior Vice President of Information Services, commented, "EMC's Enterprise Storage hardware and software are integral to MGIC's strategy to effectively manage our critical business data. EMC gives MGIC the flexibility to move toward open systems quickly, while preserving our storage investment. With EMC Symmetrix, we can easily allocate storage across various systems to reflect the ongoing changes in our business."

MGIC also will use the new EMC TimeFinder software to non-disruptively create multiple copies of its production data for backups and Year 2000 compliance testing of the company's information systems.

"Because backups and Year 2000 testing are extremely time-consuming and needed to be scheduled around production cycles, we could only work with partial images of our data at any given time," explained Jim Stirling, MGIC's Manager of Technical Services. "With EMC TimeFinder, our Year 2000 project team will be able to work more quickly and effectively by having the full picture of our production data at their fingertips. EMC TimeFinder will also allow us to take a copy of our production data for point-in-time backups, which means our backups will run without impacting our production work. This increases our uptime and access to our critical databases, and frees up our batch windows for other processes."

MGIC, based in Milwaukee, will consolidate its mainframe and open storage on its Symmetrix 5700 ESP system. The Symmetrix will serve as a central repository for all mainframe storage on an IBM mainframe for MGIC's financial and underwriting applications. It also will deliver high-performance, high-availability storage to UNIX-based servers for financial and data warehousing applications.

In addition, MGIC will implement EMC's Symmetrix Multihost Transfer Facility (SMTF) information sharing software for high-speed bulk file transfers between its mainframe and open system servers. MGIC's Sterling explained, "Today, the ever-increasing amounts of traffic between our mainframe and UNIX platforms is putting an enormous strain on our networks. With SMTF, we will be able to offload this process, free up network resources and increase the availability of our databases."

MGIC also has chosen Symmetrix Manager and Symmetrix Manager for Open Systems, EMC's information management software solutions. These products will further improve the efficiency of consolidated storage through powerful software tools that monitor Symmetrix configurations and operating characteristics.

"MGIC understands EMC Enterprise Storage is the best way to leverage valuable business data into competitive advantage, growth and customer satisfaction," commented Jim Rothnie, EMC's Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing. "Only EMC provides the information connectivity, sharing, protection, and management capabilities companies must have to extract the most value from their information resources."
